"Matt Baker is a thoughtful, smart performer. His material mixes subtle methods and engaging presentations, and the result is always fun to watch." -Joshua Jay

"Matt is smart. Matt is clever. Matt Baker has repeatedly fooled me badly. His plots are clear cut and appealing and his methods are diabolical. These days it's a cliché to hear "Don't miss this lecture", but in this case it's really true: DON'T MISS THIS LECTURE!" -Mike Powers

"Combine Matt's personality with his expertise and you obtain that classic yet rare experience: being fooled by a gentleman." -Vincent Hedan

"Matt Baker is my favorite magician you've never heard of... yet. He fools everyone but the smartest person in the room… and that’s only because that's Matt himself. Carefully crafted principles are combined in new ways that make me giddy with excitement every time I see him perform." -Caleb Wiles

"Matt Baker is one of the magic world's best kept secrets. He has fooled me time and again with his clever methods and original thinking." -Dan Garrett

"I have seen several of Matt's routines and was fascinated and fooled. I am looking forward to his lecture, among other reasons, just to see how they work…" -John Bannon

A great lecture that is a good add on to Matt’s new book, The Buena Vista Shuffle Club.
Matt covers card magic, both memorized and not, some mentalism and even a few coin effects.
With Dan H’s help at times ,all are clearly explained.
Some very clever items, but then, what would you expect from Matt?

This is an awesome lecture. First he does his show and then he breaks it down. All I can say is brilliant. His trick card college alone is worth the purchase.

Act is so great, you forget it is an Act Report this review

I am not a fan of the new format at all. I liked the old style Penguin lectures a lot better by that is my opinion and I have no idea how many others feel this way.

I am however, a new fan of Matt Baker. His act was fantastic and gives some great visual insight to some of the routines in his recent book "The Bueno Vista Shuffle Club" which is also great. As much as I am mostly a closeup only guy, I really liked the presentation of CLUE. Another thing that stood out for me was that he uses a few marketed products made and sold by others as PART of his original routines but respectfully does not go into their workings. Instead, he tells you if you do not want to use these products, here is a way to reach it with some arts and crafts. Personally, the marketed items seem perfect for the routines but the DIY will certainly do. The interview with Dan Harlan is as good and thorough as all of Dan's interviews and Matt does teach his marketed "Misfit Deck" and routine from Card-Shark and Phoenix cards.

I really liked this one.

If you like his book, you will love his act. If you like the act... Buy the book. What are you waiting for.

Worth Watching Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on March 15th, 2019
This lecture is content full. Some material is new and original, while some makes thoughtful use of items the viewer may already own. The viewer is very likely to see at least one item s/he may want to use. Most notable about Matt's material is he puts in a lot of thought and creativity; every piece of each routine has a purpose, and there is a multiplicity in his approach which adds to the spectator's entertainment and mystification. It goes beyond simple tricks or puzzles. It appears to me Matt is serious about contributing to the magic field in a valuable way and magicians are likely to see and hear more of him in the future. Being a math professor Matt provides a fresh approach to magic. Worth watching.

Very good lecture Report this review

This is definitely one of the better penguin lectures I’ve seen. The card magic is fantastic. It’s not only layman fooling but it will fool most magicians. The closing routine would not fit my type of performance but don’t let that stop you from watching it. It would make for a great closer if it fit you style of show.

I was really fascinated by the show and the following explanations. I will above all integrate the Quiver and the Germano Deck in my personal show. Thanks a lot, Matt!

Clever Matt Report this review

The first trick will go straight to my repertoire. It is baffling. I saw Matt perform it before in a show and I had no clue.
The other tricks are also very strong and entertaining.
His Misfit deck is a killer trick and provides many opportunities for humorous play with the spectator.

A bunch of us session with Matt in Atlanta. He tries new things on us. We scratch our heads and he lets us suffer.
I finally know how some of his baffling tricks work.
The "Card College" trick is really something. I saw Matt perform this many times.
My girlfriend picked that trick as her favorite when she saw Matt and other magicians perform.
I will use this now and look like a Wiz.
All other tricks are great too.
Well done my friend.
