Fitting a Thumb Tip?

I have a Vernet Classic TT, and when I slip it on, it has the ABILITY to go completely over my thumb, but when I use it "properly" it goes to just the joint, and I can "flick" it off if I wanted, but to give it a good "firm" seal I have to bend my thumb a bit.

Anyways, I just bought a 9inch silk, and I put the whole thing into the TT, and sure enough when I put the TT on now it just falls off?

I've been told you can fit lots of different things in a TT, but I can't even fit a 9inch silk? Am I doing something wrong? Should I get a junior tip? is there a specific method to 'packing' a TT?

Help?
