I suspected the technique at play here when I was watching the performance. But this will fool magicians. It is a bit procedural but a) the spectator handles the cards for, what appears to be, the critical part of the process and b) it does not last too long and become tedious.

I really like this and it only took half an hour to get the process down to “muscle memory”.
