Ok, as you already can see from the demo, this effect will end up with a page getting torn out of
one of your books. Maybe you don't have a problem with this... personally, if I was going to end up
doing this effect, it would be on whatever I could find in a dollar bin, bought specifically for
this purpose.
What really turned me off was when Mr. Fields boasted that he has books
prepped for this effect all over the place... "...at friends' houses... I even set one up at a
bookstore, and came back later and did the effect". Sorry, but if someone came into my home or
place of business, and I discovered they'd torn pages out of some of my books, things would get very
unpleasant. Aside from the blatant lack of respect for the personal property of others, well... I'm
not going to get into a long rant about the devolution of culture, but books used to garner a whole
lot more respect than this.
Another complaint about the marketing of this effect: it
requires the use of a certain type of gimmick that a LOT of people will have a problem with. Many
people simply don't like working with this sort of stuff, and nowhere is it hinted that it is
required. Certainly one could've made that deduction from the nature of the effect, but I'm sure
some people will be blindsided and disappointed by this.
Fially, I don't think Mr. Fields
is going to win too many fans with his premise that "mentalism is boring". There are many working
mentalists who refute this every time they hit the stage. Saying that "mentalism is boring" sounds
like a rationalization made by someone who can't properly engage an audience.
