Great trick. Can be done close up or on stage. It is kinda hard to do, probably because I still get nervous sticking a needle into the balloon. The needle does actually fully penetrate the balloon as does the thread. It is actually stunning. Sometimes my shaking hand will pop the balloon- this is OK. Makes the crowd laugh and I have fun with it. At first, I was popping the balloons because I was so nervous puncturing the balloon with the needle. Then, I just started doing it to open the routine (makes the kids go nuts!!!). So it is a great climax when you actually perform the trick. I always end with popping the balloon.
It really does look like magic. I am actually somewhat is awe (maybe surprised) when I stick the needle thru the ballon. Good trick, worth the $$$.
Also, get the needle wand that Penguin sells to store your wand it. The needle is sharp and the wand protects it. Plus, it looks classy. And it has another secret function. Worth the $$$ too.
Oh yeah, stock up on the balloons. they are not reuseable.

All these comments are right. Now, you want a variation you can try? I've learned how to work a color balloon into the clear one, and inflate them both (in preparation, of course). This takes a little patience, but then what you can do in performance is pop the inner balloon without popping the clear one. That will get their attention! Give it a try!

Balloons were small. Although I use vasiline to lubricate the tip.
