Since I'm still working (slowly) on the moves Steven Brundage teaches in Cube 3, I've been looking
for a good gimmick-based instant solve cube. Considering most gimmicks are $100+, this is a good
alternative to that.
Pros:
Good price, full downloadable Vimeo video with
explanations on gimmick construction and handling. Full instruction on how you need to alter a new
cube to make it work with the gimmick. There's enough material here to make two basic gimmicks, so
if you mess up with some pretty precise cutting, you're not out of luck.
Cons:
The
colors given are not an exact match on the newest official Rubik's Cubes (for example, the Rubik's
Speed Cube, which handles the best), so you might need to hunt down a good match. The pattern
squares are just slightly smaller than the actual Cube squares as well. No one will notice at a
distance or on video, but it is noticeable close-up.
Also, the video recommends buying
actual Rubik's stickers for better realism, but with the size difference you'll need to build a new
gimmick without the provided pattern. The video suggests you can avoid gimmick slippage by getting
additional materials that are not provided.
Overall, a good effect for the money. If you
don't mind some involved arts and crafts to construct the gimmick, you'll get a decent trick.
That'll give me some time to work up my manipulation skills to Brundage level.
