I use (like Craig Petty does) the Mnemonica system by Juan Tamariz and I perform mostly direct
mentalism routines with it. However, I am always looking for good magic routines with it, simply
because I think a memorized deck is such a strong tool. It gives you a mental element that is able
to create so much mystery for the audience and joy for the performer.
So, I was intrigued by the
Craig Petty project, also because I liked his Invisible Deck project in which he proved to be an
out-of-the-box thinker.
With this project, he presented a style of magic that I just don't care
for. The "self-working" section was underwhelming, I had the feeling it was magic based on
distraction of the audience, rather than strong, clear, impossible moments.
With the other
routines, I can imagine that some people like these. But I don't really share the taste for multiple
decks and writing on the backs of the cards, so I will not use these. However, there is one routine
I found very good: It's a card-to-number in which the performer predicts, very direct, the card and
number, before both are found matching in the other deck, hold by one participant. But: I wouldn't
use this, because I (and therefore potentially my audience too) would find it just too strange to
write a prediction on the back of a card deck. If you don't see a problem with this, or maybe even
can handle it as a strong (or comic) element in the routine, this could be quite a good one.
Unfortunately I cannot say this for the others.
