I thoroughly enjoyed Curtis’ lecture. I should admit at the outset of this that Curtis is one of the
people on my Mt. Rushmore of coin magic. I’ve been a fan of his for years. If I can sum this up in
one word it would be “inspiring”. Curtis’ work will inspire you to do coin magic. The pieces he
shares in this lecture will inspire you to think differently about coin magic. As he discussed in
the lecture, traditionally people have limited coin magic to appearances, disappearances,
transformations and transpositions; however, it can be so much more than that. This lecture is
indicative of what coin magic can be. Are you going to perform all of what Curtis teaches here?
Probably not, at least not verbatim. That said, you will use various moments from what is taught, at
a minimum. For the workers, Ringwraiths, CoinRoll, and Conservation, among other pieces are
completely doable, workable, and commercial pieces. The Lawyer’s Tale, for me, was worth the
proverbial cost of the lecture. And, Six Cylinder is a powerhouse of a traditional coin routine by
John Ramsay. I could keep going. There is a ton of stuff on this that will inspire your creativity
and get you thinking, like it did for me. It will expand how you look at coin magic as being more
than quick tricks and help you see that it can be thoughtful, evoke emotions, and create theater for
your audiences.
