One of my first gimmicks that I owned was a thumb tip. I got it about 30 years ago. It was the only
one they had in the store and it fit way down on my thumb and was very loose--it was obviously made
for someone bigger than me. I used it to open my act as a junior magician producing and vanishing a
silk: a wow moment. I didn't know it could do anything else.
I recently watched Smoothini
on American Got Talent (2014) pour salt into his had, make it disappear, then reappear in the other
hand. He did the same with water. He is using a thumb tip, I thought. I didn't know it could do
that! This was a reawakening. Now, my thumb tip is way too loose for water, so I turned to the thumb
tip guide on Penguin Magic's website and learned that there are different types, materials, and
sizes of thumb tips and that some work better with liquids and other better with fire, silks, and so
forth.
In addition to the website guide, the video also has a discussion about fit and
types. From both of these, I learned that my old thumb tip is way too big -- I never did grow into
it.
I am so glad that I found your guide and found this video. What is old is new again.
