Usually, I give 5 stars for something only if it is a very powerful effect that gets great reactions with my performance. I have not experienced the reactions I expected from it, doing this routine. I feel like it is because you really have to drive home that the volunteer is not acting, which they are not. It seems impossible to convince everyone. However, the volunteer seems to have no idea how it is done, which actually surprised me! That is one reason I love this so much. It seems like the rest of the audience is more suspicious than the volunteer. Odd but interesting...
So, I was in a situation where I was not performing but someone knew I was a magician and asked in front of a group of people if I could hypnotize people. So, although I didn't have my gimmick on me and could not prevent them from tearing the paper at the end, I did have my OX bender with me. An idea quickly popped into my mind and I went through the routine with a flier I tore in half, but instead of ending with "Weak" and having them not tear the paper, I ended with Strong and made them look at the word longer. I then had them bend a borrowed quarter in their hand! It was convincing to everyone! It got a huge reaction (better than OX gets alone) and now by adding that to the paper not being torn in other performances, it creates a more convincing situation since they were just able to bend a borrowed coin. This combination makes the reactions far better!
