I like Dan Harlan's work. His Tarbell stuff is awesome, but this act isn't his strongest stuff. The
routine with the spectator's $20 bill is worth watching to see the audience interaction and how to
take a simple effect and play it big. The "Cheese Whiz" effect is actually pretty funny with his
Jeff McBride imitation. The rest is average.
Some of the spectators don't work as well
with him as they could, but that's a perfect picture of real work in a real comedy club, where the
spectators sometimes enjoy the spotlight a little too much.
His ideas on audience
interaction are interesting, but it's doubtful any of the effects will really require explaining. As
I said, I like Dan's stuff but this isn't his strongest work. I think it's due to the fact that the
focus is "Packs Small Plays Big", meaning it all has to fit into a briefcase. He accomplishes this
admirably.
You will probably come away with some good ideas and inspiration to take some
of your other routines and approach them from a new direction. Even if you don't do any of these
routines, at least you'll get inspired to try something different.
