The Secrets of Zombie Ball
Learn a classic of card magic that your audience will remember forever.

If you could have one set of magic DVDs, this would be it! This benchmark collection features just about all of magic's most enduring and classic effects and routines. It's a fabulous compendium with many of the top masters in the world of magic teaching their handlings and routines for some of magic's classics. Linking rings, sponge balls, metal bending, cups and balls, thumb tips, Zombie, color-changing knives, and many, many more topics are all gathered in this one terrific DVD reference set. Each volume covers a specific subject and features new, old, and sometimes rare footage by some of the top video producers in magic.

It's been said that while others saw a block of marble, Michelangelo saw the figure of David. Similarly, Joe Karson saw a vision of a floating ball in a plumbing fixture and subsequently created one of the most popular magic tricks ever.

What makes Zombie such an appealing trick is that, while it looks like real magic when it's performed well, it requires no assistants, rigging or other elaborate staging that previous methods for the Floating Ball required.
However, its one drawback is how easy it is to perform Zombie badly.

In this volume, youll meet three masters of Zombie, each with their own interpretation of this classic of magic. Al Schneider begins your post-graduate course with a short, punchy routine that's perfect for those just learning Zombie to become acquainted with the basic moves and handling. He also provides some great tips on modifying the props for maximum deceptiveness. Jeff McBride is next with perhaps the most elaborate exposition of Zombie ever produced. Every move is demonstrated and explained in explicit detail, including ways to get into, and out of, the routine. He also teaches you ways to accomplish the illusion without the standard gimmick. Lastly, Tommy Wonder explains his revolutionary modifications to the apparatus and the astounding effects that are possible.

If you've always wanted to be among the select few who perform Zombie well, you'll find no better resource than this DVD.

An effect such as the Zombie can be done badly. That seems to be what the DVD wants to help you avoid. However, while the information contained is good, it is not the best. Jeff McBride goes through a great technical class, but does not provide a routine. Not that you should want to copy a routine, but it would be good to see how he puts the techniques into play. I find Al Schneider dull. His performances and acting come off with a flat affect. But he does provide a routine and pretty good instruction. Tommy Wonders section is the shortest with just some tips and no routine. I have several WGM DVD's and this one is not on par. Treat this DVD as more of a supplement to your Zombie training and that will give you the proper context. Try and get something with routines so you can see how the performers integrate their tips and instructions.

It helps you to get started on zombie ball and it gives helpful advice to the novice. The modifications suggested and ideas about zombie foulard choice were helpful as well!

I have been wanting to include a Zombie Ball routine in my act but realize this is one trick that is difficult to do well. This DVD is the solution to that problem. Just the information about gimmick modification is worth the price of the entire DVD. I wasn't looking for a routine to copy, I just wanted explanations of the basic moves, ins and outs, and silk and gimmick management. I got all of that, and more, just from the Jeff McBride section. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Video contains some good ideas on usage and nice tips to the routine. Working with the Zombie is a lot like Sponge Balls... You have to learn the individual moves and then assemble them into your routine... The various instructors teach various handlings and some really nice 'end to end' routines.

After receiving the Zombie Ball I didn't want to try it at all without getting some input. I was wanting to change the set up. This shows the right way to set it up and why they do it that way. This shows different routines that the pros use that allow you to start being creative on your own. It is a great routine when done right with practice. Like making it sail and flow---not like when you learned to drive with a stick. Great explanations.

Neat Trick! Report this review

I'm a big fan of Zombies in spite of their over-exposure and poor presentation. As Tommy Wonder says of the trick, "We shouldn't blame the piano for the music played on it." The zombie I got from Penguin is perfect as is, but I modified it by curving the wire and reworking the cork so it stays fixed in place.

I bought a second one recently as back up, but am considering a mod which hinges the stick at the top of the ball (on the inside). It's Wonder's idea, and I made one last month with an Xmas ornament. It really makes the ball float more realistically.

Anyway, thumbs up on this one as a basic package. The chrome ball is beautiful!

I have found this DVD to be very helpful in learning about the techniques required for performing a smooth Zombie routine. My only wish is that some of the individual moves were shown in slow motion. But that's a minor complaint. Overall, I would recommend this DVD to anyone interested in Zombie.

Another great compilation DVD by L&L. This time on the Zombie Ball. The zombie ball is a classic levitation. Performed poorly, you'll look silly and the audience will catch on. Performed well and it can be poetry in motion. This DVD features 3 masters of the zombie. Al Schneider wrote the book on the zombie - literally. He covers the basics from modifying the gimmick to care of the silk. Jeff McBride takes a deep dive into the various moves that you can do to build a routine. Jeff is a wonderful teacher. Lastly, the incomparable Tommy Wonder delves into his mind to unlock the secrets that make the zombie look like modern wizardry. Tommy does not provide a routine but his lecture is worth the price and then some.
