During my career as a semi professional magician, I have come across 2 excellent magic books. The
first one was Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz and Psychological Subtleties #1 (PS1) being the second
book. I give PS1 4 Stars. PS1 is a compilation of quick, direct and short mentalism effects that
one can use to warm the audience up before the show. If we were to make an analogy to restaurant
food, PS1 tricks are appetizers before the entrees. The tricks in PS1 are designed to be introduced
as "friendly tests" rather than full-fledged tricks designed to make people feel tricked. To me,
"not to make your audience feel tricked" a principle worth exploring. Also, since these things are
designed to be presented as tests, I do not feel down or stuck anymore when I fail in forcing the 4
of Hearts in the "Princess Card Trick." PS1 is full of information and statistical data that one
can use to build one's own little test. I use the nickel and dime test to read my friends' minds
over the phone every time I have the chance, big deal if I do not get it right.

Banachek is a genius! This book is a very informative book for mentalists. It goes into a lot of
different mentalism ideas involving the use of psychology. This book changed my whole perspective on
the performance of mentalism, and it has helped to shape my current performing style. If you are a
professional mentalist and you do not have this book, you need to get it immediately! If you are a
hobbyist magician, then you could probably let this one pass.

This is a classic from Banachek, with many of the techniques used to increase chances of getting
"hits" and easy "outs" for misses. If you want a book on some of the elementary psychological tricks
used in mentalism, this is a great place to start.

I use 1 routine that made it worth more than the price of the book. This is an amazing resource for
converting mental to mentalism.

Wonderful book. Invaluable for all Magicians and Mentalists.
Whoops, I didn't mean to share
this. I want to keep it just for myself!
This isn't a book of random effects and routines. Banachek et. al. can help you find ways to stack
the odds in your favor. I've been amazed at how some of the subtleties have helped me be secure in
my spectator's choice. This series helped me understand that there is "thought reading" to a certain
degree.
This is classic text and must have for any mentalist whether amateur or professional. I used some of
the concepts the very next day and they worked just as described.
