R. Paul Wilson has created a transposition so visual your audience will start questioning their own eyes. Four aces and four kings change places one at a time and then change back in a blink of an eye. This is R. Paul Wilson’s Backfire.

Here’s what happens:
The magician has their audience members hold a cloth at the corners like a small stage. Then the magician extracts the kings and the aces from a deck of cards, and openly places the aces face down on the cloth. One at a time, and with no visible moves, the kings and the aces change places. Once all four aces and kings have transposed, they instantly switch back. Then the magician can hand out the cards for examination.

Backfire includes custom printed cards from the United States Playing Card Company that do all the work for you. There’s almost no sleight of hand, and so easy that anyone can perform it. Thanks to the clever routining from R Paul Wilson, the change happens so fast that your audiences will swear it looks like real magic. Taking cues from his hit effect Ricochet, this elevates the reset plot to a whole new level of astonishment. There’s nothing else quite like Backfire.

The clean up alone is amazing in both its simplicity and effectiveness. This is a REAL magic trick.

I've been a magician for going over 40 years now, and I'v been semi retired now for 2, and it's thanks to my son that's gotten my interest peaked back into magic. That being said, the only thing missing from my repertoire was card tricks. I just never had the dexterity in my fingers, but this trick you don't need to worry about doing anything too fancy, so that's right up my alley. This is an awesome card trick, and very easy to do. Sometimes less is more, and this hits the nail right on the head. Two very big thumbs way up.

Awesome trick became even better Report this review

When I saw online, for the first time, the Ricochet, I was fooled. Unfortunately, by that time the trick was already out of stock so I could not buy it. I saw her the performance of Oz, and after like 10 re-watches I finally saw the move done to accomplish the trick and started to learn it jus from the spectators' point of view. That time I also did not know the name of the move and who was its author. Later on, I found the move somewhere and bought the instructional video, finding the finesses, that made that move invisible. Unfortunately, the cards needed for the Ricochet (understand, with the same properties) are not just some gaff cards you can buy in a gaff deck. You have to either buy the trick (unfortunately unavailable by that time) or try to make your own set. I am not that good in gaff making, and I didn´t know about anybody to make them for me in Czech Republic.
Then I have contacted Mr. Wilson and asked if there is still some possibility to buy somewhere the trick or just the cards. From him, I knew (from June) that Penguin is going to release this effect, changer in a way that no sleight is needed. I was looking forward to the release date a lot.
When I saw the change done to the trick for the first time I was a bit disappointed. but only until the end of the instructional video. Then I saw it couple of times more and now I am more than enthusiastic about receiving the props for the trick.
Regarding the video, the instruction is really clear.
and I know that this effect will be killer, especially for those, wh know the ricochet. because this handling is really moveless.

Easy and Blow Away Show Stopper Report this review

This is as good as it gets. Easy, visual, elegant. Include in any other 4 ace or king routine and it's the finale! Love it! Cannot make these cards yourself and they do all the work. End clean. Great motivation and thinking. So good! ALSO - you can do this with a borrowed deck!

Great trick - incredible reactions Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on December 11th, 2020
This trick is sooo simple, but well thought out. You get great reactions from the spectators and with the last "move" (which is also sooo simple) you are able to show all aces AND kings. And this blows your spectaors away!

I only think it is a bit overprized, at last there are only some gaff cards. But because of the great routine, I give it 5 stars anyway!

Thanks Paul for this great trick, I will definitely use it!

Close to perfect Report this review

This is a terrific fooler that is simple to do and surprisingly is slight free. Simple timing creates amazing surprise. This is something you, all of you, will do. Paul has this routined perfectly. I'm of a mind that the very best tricks at least as foolers combine sleight of hand with a gaff so the method is impenetrable. Well this effect I don't believe can be improved with sleights. It is straightforward, moves quickly, creates a completely unexpected climax and is easily cleaned up at the end. Buy it.

Very Clever and Easy To Perform Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on November 3rd, 2020
Great if someone is holding a cover over the cards while you are doing the effect.Only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5. Also,it is not for a beginner due to couple of hand movements.I will be using this effect

I always choose carefully when I consider adding a gaff-card routine since I don't want to have to stuff gaffed cards and decks in all my pockets. However, this is a must addition for several reasons. One, you can load the gaffed cards into any deck with any back design...even a borrowed deck. You don't need to carry a special deck since the gaff cards do not have a specific design. Second, upon performance, I have received the most astonished reactions of any trick I do. Seriously. Spectators are often left speechless as they ponder whether they just witnessed a real teleportation! It is easy to perform but that doesn't mean it doesn't take practice. You have to get smooth and comfortable with the setup and steps of presentation.

Backfire Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on August 27th, 2022
Just opened Backfire and watched the tutorial. This is a solid effect and i like it very much. It is good for any skill level and does require practice (of course anything of value requires work) The practice is not hard, you just need to get the hang of the movements and the reason for them. The patter is easy as well and makes sense. It then is pretty simple but still real strong. Well done Paul Wilson and your video is easy to follow and you teach it very well.

Thank you !!!

I've not received the cards yet but the tutorial is superb, nothing to go wrong with the gaff cards, nothing to fail wear or snap. The tutorial is well explained at a pace that you can follow, there's no dodgy moves or slights to go wrong. After the change, then change back, it's explained how to finish clean, with all cards can be examined. A nice final touch for any sceptics or anyone that may suspect gaffed cards.
