Perform a miracle card discovery from the other side of the planet. Developed by the master of Verbal Magic, Juan Tamariz, and presented by Dan Harlan, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is an incredible card effect that is great to perform on Zoom, Skype, even over the phone. Direct from Juan Tamariz’ amazing book Verbal Magic, this effect is a truly remarkable card trick that will leave your audience speechless.

Here’s what happens:

The spectator takes a deck of cards and makes some small piles of cards on the table which are then thoroughly shuffled. The spectator thinks of any card from these packets and then shuffles the packets. After more cutting and shuffling the audience casts a mysterious shadow over one of the packets and spells the word ‘magic’ discovering their selected card at the position they spelled to.

Originally performed over the radio by Juan Tamariz, this effect is as amazing in person as it is over the internet. Expertly taught by Dan Harlan, you’ll learn the mechanics of the effect as well as a full presentation and the nuances to this miracle card discovery effect even though you aren’t in the same room. This simple to perform trick is a powerful effect that magicians of all skill levels will love. This is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Juan Tamariz, presented by Dan Harlan.

The method behind this trick is known to many laymen and is easily recognizable. Even to someone who doesn't know that method this is clearly a procedure-heavy mathematical trick. The other tricks on video from Tamariz' book are excellent; I suggest you buy those and pass on this.

I find the end of taking 3 cards from the bottom to the top and then spell the word Magic not so satisfying. When the chosen card ends second from the top
I perform the Down-Underdeal. Top card on the table, second card under the packet. Third card on the table etc.. You end with 1 card and that's the chosen card.
But how you perform it , the trick is amazing. Thank you Tamariz and Dan Harlan.

I’ve already done this twice in person and twice virtually and will be doing it again for another virtual event in the coming weeks. It has actually received better reactions than I thought it would. The spectators seem to have fun and are actually surprised by the results. I was expecting that, at the end of it all, someone would say something sarcastic like, “it’s just math”, but the shuffling and moving of cards around seems to sufficiently hide the simplicity of what’s really going on. I even had one spectator who was not so great with following my verbal and physical lead, make a mistake at the end, spelling the magic phrase. I stopped the presentation and got her to where she needed to be. I thought the impact of it would now be completely lost. But it wasn’t. She turned over her card and was amazed.
I’ve added a few jokes, my own patter/script, and added a step outside of what’s taught. I’m enjoying it. And it works in person or over a video conference. I wouldn’t recommend trying to explain it all over the phone. It could be done, but I think your visual cues/examples provides some interaction that benefits the truck overall and it allows you to verify your instructions are being carried out correctly and allows for making adjustments to what your spectator is doing via that interaction along the way if needed. Yes, there are steps and repetition; but so far no one has gotten bored with it; which is good, as self-working tricks that require the spectator to follow step after step can sometimes cause them to lose interest quickly and/or make mistakes. That hasn’t happened with this, yet.

Fantastic effect. Tutorial is excellent and ez to follow. Once you learn the secret, soooo many options one has. Highly recommend AND highly recommend Penguin Magic as a dealer. Never have had a bad experience with this company! Oh, and did I mention, the price is excellent.
Recommend this download to add to your card effect repertoire!

Weakest of these Tamariz/Harlan effects Report this review

Works perfectly but not as magical as the other Tamariz effects Dan's been teaching--just too much procedure for me. Dan does a TERRIFIC job with these!

Decent enough trick but badly advertised Report this review

The video seems to very selectively omit the most important part of the performance. Most card magicians will probably recognize the method once they actually see the full performance.
