Curveball has been completely redesigned for iPhone (all models)

Ask a spectator to take out THEIR Phone and open THEIR address book. Have them scroll through the names in THEIR address book and stop anytime they want. Have them focus on that person. You will reveal the name of the person and sometimes extra bits of personal information you couldn't possibly have known. Perfect for walk-around. Perfect for street. Perfect for school. Perfect for work.

Bonus effect: Guess your spectator's iPhone password. This is one of Oz's favorite effects to perform at his walk-around gigs. Ready to go straight into your act.

  • Completely impromptu.
  • Uses the spectator's phone.
  • No mirrors.
  • No gimmicks.
  • No stooges.
  • No special software.
Your spectator must have a certain type of phone for Curveball to work (many different models work, but one type is best). This type of phone is extremely popular. You just need one person in a group that has a phone that will work and you're off to the races. We run into people with this type of phone all the time.

Great trick, awesome reactions. Report this review

I had the original Curveball and loved it, but I ran into a problem... The type of phone required for that slowly started to disappear and I could very rarely perform it anymore. Along comes iCurveball.

Everything I love about the original is here. It's 10 times easier to perform (no more hoping you did the "move" right).

I am a full time pro. Last week was graduation week, so I purchased this to perform for the graduates. (The original was such a hit I had to get the update). This trick kills.

Here's a simple routine that I use. Perform iCurveball, then after revealing the name, have them call that person and perform an invisible deck or I prefer "super sharpie". For some reason reading someone's mind is even more powerful over the phone. (If performing Super Sharpie, have them take a photo of what you wrote and text it to them, super strong reactions!)

Get this, you will not be disappointed!

First off, oz and the team nailed it. I work in a restaurant and having an impromptu truck like this is a great one to turn an unhappy table into a very happy one.

That being said, there is one small nuance that you need to make sure you do prior to performing the effect that the DVD does not mention. I'll point it out on the discussion.

Great job guys!!

WOW. this one is simple but super duper strong!

Oz does real great job explaining minor details and the bonus effect is real great.

I do recommend getting the Live lecture where he reveals a second method of the bonus effect.

If you wanna do something with iPhone then get this. It is easy and you do it with a borrowed phone!

Great mentalist effect.

This is one of those effects that will make you say, "Why didn't I think of that?!" The method is so simple and direct that you wouldn't be blamed for doubting whether this effect will work or if you'll be caught.

Practice this effect until you master it; have a well thought out patter, polish your audience management skills, and this effect will work. The effect isn't highly dependent on your audience but if you have little to no audience management skills, this effect may not work well in your favor. In my opinion, your patter and how you present the effect is very important. If you perform this effect with Mickey Mouse-like patter, you may have no "wow" factor or worse, someone will figure out your method.

I rated this at 4 stars because Oz didn't cover an important detail in the video regarding a function of the iPhone. This detail is important because if it's not taken cared of during the performance, everyone will know your method. I'm sure performers have already mentioned this detail in the forums but I'm having issues logging into the forums so I can't give my two cents. Once you know the method you'll figure out this important detail. With some time, you can find a way to fix this issue. Other than that the video, the explanation, the tips and advice, and the bonus effect are great! The effect is practical, simple to do, uses an object almost everyone has (this will work with all model iPhones - if their contact list can scroll up and down, it will work), yet plays a BIG impact. I highly recommend this effect!

Explanation could be better... Report this review

PROS:

- I booked a $1250 strolling close-up gig last weekend as a result of this effect. She said she had watched my videos. I asked her "which video" grabbed her, and she said "You icurveball video," (obviously I'm kidding, she didn't mention it by name). This was for a tech company, so she said it would appeal to that group.
I think she mentioned one other video but this one stood out to her.
You can get a lot of mileage out of this; however, if you are a beginner and lack audience management skills, you can muck this up badly.

- Packs small. Are you effin kidding me? This takes ZERO pocket space. This means a great deal to a worker. Pocket space is precious realty to a professional. You just can't show up to a gig looking good and also having your two favorite trick decks on you, your ordinary deck, 2 trick sharpies and an ordinary one, an imp pad, a stack of business cards, your trick wallet, and on and on.

CONS:

- I had to watch the performance video closely 2 or 3 times to catch exactly what he says at the "p__k" moment. In his explanation, he does say, "This is where you take your p__k," but he said that without saying anything relevant before that point. I rewound and I was like, "What?!" He should have slowly said the words and demoed it, going through the motions, as he usually does with tricks that require technical moves, like how he does in What's in A Name. This should demand the same methodical and patient instruction.

- In his performance, he did not turn his body during the moment. In the explanation he said this should be done. This is not much of a con, but I'm pointing it out here. Maybe it was because he was performing for just two people and it didn't make sense to do a turn. But now I'm not sure where it would make sense to twist your body as you do the moment.

- Not ideal for an opener. I don't think so anyway. This is simply because it may come off as a bit uncooth asking for someone's phone when they haven't warmed up to you.

--

My tips (from very limited experience):

1. On account of my great misunderstanding of his explanation, I have discovered an additional moment to glimpse in case you missed it the first time. "Wait IS it moving? Okay." Immediately after saying that, you know what to do.

2. If you have a choice between a naked phone and a phone encased in an Otterbox or something, choose the former. The Otterbox requires a lot more force to push a button.

3. Oz (pronounced "Ahz"... why would you waste the perfect name for a magician by correcting people and insisting it's not pronounced like the wizard?) mentions this in the video, but this is just showmanship that if you're not doing already when you have an opportunity like this, you're wasting a great opportunity. Have them walk well away from you. Or you walk well away from them.

I recommend this effect but with some reservations. The secret and moves are very easy. This leaves us having to have a great presentation and reveal.

There is a move though that to some will not be very deceptive. Good audience management and mis-direction are a must.

There are also some performance issues such as when you can perform this and sound issues. These are not addressed in the DVD.

If you are willing to put these aside and know you will really need to practice and hone before it is ready to perform then buy it.

This was amazing! I watched the video a couple of times, and I figured out how it was done, but I wanted to be sure! I was right, but what Oz talked about really improved the way i was going to perform it! The first person I performed to, Buckled over in shock and laughter!

I performed this to my girlfriend today, and when it comes to my magic she is the most honest person you can meet, if she knows how its done, she'll say. 5 minutes of practice was all it took. I performed it to her, and her reaction was probably the greatest reaction ive ever seen. This is too cheap! You get this for 20 dollars, when it should be 200 dollars. I suggest everyone buys this.
