The rope and tape principle discussed in this lesson is one of the oldest, and best, in the realm of magic and can be applied to a variety of items.

It first appeared in the English language in The Discovery of Witchcraft in 1584, where Reginald Scott wrote about it as though it was in common use for some time.

Most likely, it's a principle which was handed down from ancient magicians to their apprentices for centuries before being written down.

A modern, close-up version is known as "Grandmother’s Necklace," and when worked on a much bigger scale, it is incredible, visual and entertaining magic.

Dan will start off big with a presentation involving car keys, two jackets, and a pair of chairs. If you can release the ropes, you're free to go.

Then, Dan goes even bigger by creating an opening, costume-change, escape illusion using his own quick release method.

And, if you've been with us for the last couple of lessons, Dan finally gets to show you how to prepare the strings to release that puzzling orange.

You'll also learn a really cool version that allows you to make a quick escape from two unprepared ropes tied around you and threaded through your jacket.

And, finally, Dan got one of his spectators directly involved in his questionable activities as they performed a party stunt that's bound to please.

So, if you're ready to explore the versatility of The Rope and Tape Princple, this lesson contains some strange possibilities and weird variations.

Tricks included:
- Coats, Tapes, and Rings
- Coats, Ropes and Rings
- The Prisoner’s Escape or Hanging Oneself with Ropes
- The Magic Orange
- Walking Through Tapes
- Another Tapes Release

Tarbell Rope and Tape for 21st Century Report this review

I greatly appreciate this project and the efforts to take a classic work and make it contemporary. There are tips in this video that were not included in the original course, and handlings that make the original routines even more deceptive. The best part for those of us who own the original course is the inspiration and ideas gained from watching the effects with new presentation twists.

Leave it to Dan to take classics, add his own spin and make it usable for today's audience. Thank you Dan.

If you are a serious student and/or performer of magic, you really need to study the craft... and learn from it. It's fundamental. And the Tarbell Course is so much more than "just some tricks" - it's the essence of "how, why and when". A foundation of understanding. Dan Harlan makes it perfectly clear: with just some easy sleights and principles, YOU can entertain people. This is a great way to understand what good magic is all about. Well done interpreting the classics, making them modern Mr Harlan! Well done. Get this - Tarbell is a true MasterClass.

I’ve never been thrilled with the principle used here. I was wrong.

There is so much great mileage that can be achieved with this. So many nice escapes, and cords through fruit. Impromptu versions. Easily prepared versions. And many presentational hooks.

Good stuff.

When I saw the title I did not think I would like it. I started watching and when the lesson was over I was wanting more. Dan is great at keeping the information flowing without sounding repetitive. Made me rethink some rope tricks that could make it into my show.

Dan Harlan makes the magic come alive. His performance and showmanship set the bar for any and all who want to experience a connection with your audience! The information has always been there, but his explanations and
performance style breaths new life in these classics. You will learn more that just the tricks, you will learn principles and theatrical skills that can serve you well for a live time.
Definitely worth more than the price.

Not having read this chapter before watching this video I would not have come up with so many versions of using this principle. Knowing a basic version of the trick and then making use of volunteers and clothing is quite clever.
I don't know that I will be doing any of these at this time but as with so many of the things in Tarbell having the knowledge and the ability just adds some more ideas and capabilities in your arsenal.

Dan went over the rope and tape principle in great detail and then proceeds to do some pretty amazing things with it. He even does a sort of quick change routine using this principle.

I keep just wanting to buy all of Dan's Tarbell lectures. Each time there is a jewel of an idea, or prevention, or subtlety, that's worth the price of the whole lecture.
