The secrets taught in this lesson are not tricks. They're the secrets of presentation. If you're looking for tricks, this lesson isn't for you. But if you're interested in taking your magic to the next level, you'll be watching this one many times.

Michael Ammar is one of the best magicians alive today, and together with Dan, they discuss some of the most important lessons a magician can learn.

You can either learn the secrets in this 77 minute lesson from Michael Ammar and Dan Harlan.. or hey, you'll eventually pick them up after a lifetime of regular performance. Your choice!

By now, you've learned an incredible amount of modern, performance-ready magic tricks supported by solid sleight-of-hand techniques. And, you've picked up ways to customize effects to suit your own needs. But, there are some performance secrets that go way beyond what an audience sees you do... to the very core of how they experience your magic.

As a magician, you are fundamentally an entertainer, and to be successful you must please your audience. If they don't like you, it doesn't matter what you do.

There have been entire books written on this subject, but this lesson attempts to give you an overview of many of the most important aspects to keep in mind when you are performing for an audience, whether they're your friends or the paying public.

Join Dan, and his good friend, Master-Magician Michael Ammar, as they discuss ways you can get an audience on your side from the very beginning.

They talk about capturing an audience's imagination, being original, understanding human nature, working on your timing, humor, showmanship, personality, and so much more.

You'll soon discover that when you begin by pleasing your audience, they will respond many times over with applause, laughter, and delight.

The best Tarbell thus far Report this review

I'm not sure if it fits the textbook definition of "irony," but my favorite Tarbell lesson thus far was this one, which contains absolutely no tricks. It's just two masters, (Michael Ammar joins Dan for this webisode) shooting the breeze about how to please an audience, loosely based on the Tarbell chapter.

I can judge the value of a lesson by how much new info I hear and find worthy of writing down. I took twice the number of notes on this one, compared to any other Tarbell lesson.

There is one nugget, in particular, that concerns how you frame your act to potential bookers. If you describe your act as suggested and the booker agrees to the price, there is something you can do to possibly boost the price. But if the booker balks at the price, there is something you can do to reduce the price without making it look like you are cheaping out and undercutting your value with other clients.

I found the aforementioned nugget well-worth the sticker price, with the rest being gravy.

Presentation and Marketing Gold Report this review

We purchase DVDs to learn a trick, but the presentation details and bits of business are oftentimes the overlooked silver lining of the purchase. This DVD is full of the thoughts of two successful professionals, who have researched the field during their careers, tested the prevailing theories, and broke new ground with their art. We are flies on the wall listening to two consummate professionals exchanging the silver linings of their art and as businessmen. Excellent in presentation, format and content.

I'm so glad you put this out when you did.
I was writing goals for my new year performing magic. One goal I wrote was to increase the caliber of my shows and to get standing ovations.
I couldn't have imagined better instruction then what was discussed in Tarbell 20 How to please your audience.
Thank you guys for the great discussion.
Maybe not for the hobbyists, but for the workers out there this is gold. I will re watch this a few times for sure. It's not just the content that was great but all the ideas it created in my mind.
Happy New Year!!!

I will sum my review with one of many great quotes from the lesson:

"Perform in such a way that people love magic more AFTER the show than they did before the show."

Michael Ammar and Dan Harlan sit down to talk about how to please your audience, basically how to make them care about what you are doing. Some great advice from two professionals that have been doing it a long time.

The Thumbtie is a great piece of magic that can be done serious, funny and anything in between. People have kind of forgotten about this plot but it's just a great performance piece that plays HUGE and Dan really goes out of his way to show you as much as you would need to know to get performing on this right away. Great work on this one!
