Causing a chosen card to mysteriously rise from the pack has fascinated magicians and captivated audiences for centuries. It's a time-tested combination of card revelation and unexpected animation.

In this lesson, you will learn a variety of methods to achieve this phenomenal effect. All of them have practical applications to particular situations. Although you're unlikely to use them all, you are sure to find methods that suit you and your typical performing conditions.

First, a simple method built right into the deck causes cards to rise, one-at-a-time, until the last two rise together, as a king and queen should.

Then, Dan shares two methods to make the entire deck rise out of the box (at your command) ready for their performance.

Next, you will learn Dan's work with a self-contained, do-it-yourself gimmicked deck that allows freely chosen cards to rise from different parts of the pack.

He also shows you a cute little comedy bit where a chosen card rises from your jacket pocket and the best part is the trouble-free operation.

Then, we get into the meat of this lesson where you will learn quite a few ways to make selected cards rise while isolated in a wine glass.

Dan even gives you a couple of intriguing options for causing the cards to float right out of the deck and up into your waiting hand.

Ultimately, Dan shows you how Thurston made a card float in the air and, best of all, Dan's stand-alone method which requires no assistants!

Then, things get kinda crazy with DeKolta's original method for creating a beautiful fountain of cards that explode on your command.

Plus, some alternate methods for this fun fountain effect, including updating the pull to achieve a fast, powerful, and surprising finish.

And finally, Dan reveals his work with a self-contained, rising card masterpiece, including how to make the fancy props for a lot less than you might expect.

So, get ready to rise to any occasion as Dan modernizes the methods of the masters to get the most out of this quintessential classic of card magic.

I love this, I thought there was only a few ways to levitate a card from the deck, but Dan really goes through A LOT! Some is practical, and some requires too much of a set up, but there is something in this lesson for everybody!

If this doesn't show that Tarbell is a great series, then I don't know what does!

The Tarbell teachings it self is worth way more than $20 BUT you also get Dans inputs in all of these rising card effects which makes these effects more powerful. Plus, if you buy the subscription, you can get about 3 of these for only $9.99. What a great deal!

If you are ever in doubt, I really do urge you to add to cart!

I have been a fan of the various techniques for rising cards since I first saw it performed as a kid.

Dan's one man floating card is AWESOME! Some may think it is a lot of work but it's also a LOT of payoff!!! You can be a legend!

Girl: "I saw this magician make a chosen card rise from the deck."

Guy: "Oh yeah, I've seen that trick."

Girl: "No I mean he literally made it LEVITATE slowly out of the deck and into the air and waved his hands all around it!"

Guy: "Was his name Gandalf?" O_o

Dan teaches you everything you need to know, including his personal touches, to present this beautiful routine.

Much more than I expected Report this review

I came in thinking that it was just going to be about pulling a card up by a thread from the back. However, there is so much more here, not only in terms of methods, but also presentations and subtleties. There are also differences presented between manually by the performer, using an assistant off stage, and automated mechanically (in a direct doable method).

Great lesson.

Tarbell rising cards Report this review

This has been one of they absolute best purchases I have ever made in over 40 years in magic. For the money spent I don't believe I have ever found anything that can match the value of this package.. Dan Harlan is an absolute genius when it comes to pulling material together. Even though I have read the Tarbell course many times, I found new material that Mr. Harlan had added, that made it unique and even more interesting. Penguin Magic, you hit a homerun with this one! Thank you, thank you!

Excellent detail on all methods from Tarbell #2. Details on thread and card hookups are outstanding and clear to follow. The detail on attaching clamps to hold a wine glass in place on the table is great.Card fountain methods are well displayed and explained.

Watch it for audience management. Report this review

Sure, Rising Cards gives you ways to work effects both practical and impractical for your style and venue. We don't all have a silencer-encased-motorized 12-ton Chester Hand Chain hoists just offstage to hook up to our silk threads. Fortunately neither does Dan. Whether you think you can use these routines or not (because the other reviews sound as if this lesson is for the platform or stage performer, but not you) the real benefit is what has been seen in all the lessons. This comes together beautifully in Lesson 27. Dan is teaching audience vetting and management, how to do it, when it is needed, when it isn't needed, even when audience card handling can be skipped altogether while leaving implanted with the audience the false memory of multiple free choices of cards. That's the best reason to get this.

Tons of set up Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on April 14th, 2015
It requires lots of set up! Some of the tricks less than others. But some of them require so much gimmick making and set up. This is not close up magic. All this magic is best to do on stage.
That being said it is still really cool and packs a ton of content! Will use some of it!

I would have paid $50 for something like this GLADLY.

This is an in-depth and VERY extensive peek at many different rising card routines. Some range from challenging set ups, to self contained and they are ALL effective.

This has been my favorite in the course so far.
