The Genii Review

Genii Magazine is the oldest and most respected magazine on magic in the United States. It has been in publication since 1936.

In the December 2003 issue, Joe M. Turner wrote the following review on Oz's DVD, Stealing Pips.

Oz Pearlman is a young pro from New York City whose deceptive card magic is easy to learn, fun to perform, and magical to watch. On this DVD, Mr. Pearlman teaches a dozen of his most usable ?workers? for close-up card magicians.

The effects are varied, ranging from predictions to vanishes to transpositions. Some of the plots are classics, but the additions Mr. Pearlman contributes are substantial and worth preserving.

Mr. Pearlman executes his material with both passion and precision. His handling of the Bertram color change caused me to reach for the remote so I could watch it again ? in his hands, it truly looks like a camera trick. His explanation of the move is clear and through, as are all of his explanations. His ?IC3? is an ungimmicked handling of David Regal?s ?Triple Vision? which eliminates the need for gaffed decks and is probably my favorite routine on the DVD.

I will share a couple of reasons why this kind of DVD appeals to me. First, the magic itself is more than just changes in finger positions, phase sequences, or sleight substitutions. In most cases, the magic represents either practical original material, in-depth expertise on a particular sleight, or a variation of an existing effect that makes a substantive change in the routine, such as eliminating the need to carry a gaffed deck. Each of these qualities is an effective motivator that spurs me to try out a new routine or move.

Another important consideration is that the production values are high but they are not turned into the star of the show. I am certainly a fan of creative and theatrical approaches to training, but when a product?s style outweighs the substance of the material being taught, I lose interest quickly. Fortunately that is not the case with this product.

This DVD is a gem and worth your time if you perform card magic in strolling or other close-up environments. (Oh, and if you?re wondering, Mr. Pearlman?s first name rhymes with ?hose.?)

I purchased this DVD at one of Oz's shows in NYC where I live. This was more than 5 years ago. Didn't surprise me, but I soon realized that I was not ready for that material at all.

In addition, most of the material is not impromptu and impractical for everyday performing situations. Out of nine effects, only 2 are completely impromptu. All the effects require a surface to work on, except for one of them that can be adapted to a standing situation. One of the effects requires a gaff, and others require set-ups with card with different colored backs, etc...

What am I saying? It's a great DVD. But if you're a beginner, I suggest Royal Road to Card Magic or even the Card College series. Learn alot of tricks that are impromptu and more practical, then tackle this DVD. I already performed Perfecto for my wife and she was blown away, even though she knows most of my stuff already.

Oz teaches a variety of material here and does it well. You'll get a bunch of new ideas and presentations from one of the guys who knows how to share his love of the art and be unusual with thinking and expression. This isn't all beginner's work; little of it is extremely difficult. I like that once you learn one move on this DVD Oz teaches you a couple of ways to use it, and that with some creativity you can apply what you have learned to other effects.

Great Card Magic Report this review

The tricks are really good and Oz makes a great job during the explanation. There are several moves that are really useful that can be easily applied to your current routines. I don't think this is a DVD for beginner's. If you know your card magic and want to learn some useful card moves and some killer applications this is a DVD I would recommend.

I like this DVD a lot because the magic and sleights are a bit more advanced than a lot of Oz's instant downloads. So when I sat down and learnt some of the tricks on the DVD it forced me to learn some slightly technical moves and magic.

If you're looking for a DVD with some very visual magic and some tricky sleights then certainly get hold of this!

This DVD just strait up isn't worth it. There's nothing on the DVD that I would actually do. I love oz pearlman's work, but to me this is the worst thing he's ever released.

A weak DVD in my opinion Report this review

I love Oz. Some of his DVDs are the most valuable tricks in my collection. In his Triumph and Clutch DVD, he goes into so much detail about the tricks.

With Stealing Pips, everything felt very weak. The tricks all felt like high effort for low reward. The effects weren't that strong, and some of the moves were done in a very complex way.

The "Gimmick" of this DVD is a simple one, that anyone can produce which is nice, but I don't think it's necessary. It adds an extra layer which can be achieved with better card handling.

I've watched the DVD a few times now trying to pull out something I can use for my own personal arsenal of tricks, but nothing sticks with me.

I think he rushes quite a bit as well. I'd prefer if he went into a bit more detail for each effect and trick.

This DVD is full of good quality stuff. Oz does a great job walking you through each of the effects. The Card Vanishes sequence is probably my favorite routine on the DVD. The SAC move is one of the techniques that could be said to be 'worth the price of the DVD'. I really like Oz' thinking with some of these moves.

When I saw this dvd, I realized that with a normal deck, you can always do things that are very amazing.
This dvd is a must have for every magician.

Dissapointing Report this review

This DVD does contain some amazing tricks, but the majority of them are just not practical for everyday use. The tricks/sleights either requires long gimicky set-ups or severe angle issues. These types of tricks would only be good infront of a webcam. I have had the DVD for over a year now I have only used one of the tricks where as I have used almost everything in Born to Preform, and Front Row Sankey (much better DVDs). The sac move is a great versitile move but the rest of the stuff is prettymuch crap. The best moves in card magic are simple and more practical ones found in BTP such as the Double lift or the pass. Save your money unless you really want to learn the sac move.

This DVD is not for the real workers (unless you're a real worker who can afford to pay thirty dollars for the SAC move and Bertram Change). These moves are useful, and will open a few doors, but that alone isn't (to me) worth the DVD. The material is largely rediculous, from Shot Caller (a confusing version of Red hot Mama) to Card Vanishes (FILLER), the only things to be gained from it are the SAC Move, the Bertram Change, and (if you're into it...) Zenneth's Alignment move. Most of the tricks leave cleanup to do, and/or involve a setup in the first place. Some people really love this DVD. You may be one of them. But I recommend anyone interested in practical, aesthetically apealing magic and coherent psychology to look to Ed Marlo, Jay Sankey, Richard Kaufman, Paul Harris, Larry Jennings, Allan Ackerman, Bill Malone, Daryl Martinez, David Harkey, Guy Hollingworth, Simon Lovell, or for the most visual stuff around, Jeff Mcbride. Stealing Pips will give you some food for thought, but it will not bring your magic to a higher level. Bottom line: if you're serious about magic, save your money.
