"In reading Inspirations, the new book by Dr. Larry Hass, I can’t count the number of times I said to myself, “Larry is crazy for giving away this routine!” Really, who would give away such strong, well thought out, killer material for the price of a book? I’ll tell you who! Someone who cares deeply about the Art of Magic! Someone who wants to elevate the level of Magic. Someone who loves Magic and Magicians, that’s who. The tricks in this book are great, but the thinking behind them and the philosophy behind the thinking are even more impressive. I congratulate my friend, Dr. Larry! With the publication of Inspirations he has made a significant and long-lasting contribution to our art. This is required reading for the serious student, amateur, and professional."Lance Burton

"Larry Hass has become the contemporary Henning Nelms. [His book] Inspirations is every bit as essential to today’s thinking performers as Nelms’s Magic and Showmanship was generations ago."Ross Johnson

"Just got my hands on a preview copy of Inspirations: Performing Magic with Excellence. The tricks are cool, the essays are clear and to the point. The amount of wisdom, advice, information and guidance that my pal Larry Hass has managed to generate, distill, extract, and present in one book is amazing." - Mac King

"Larry Hass has personally helped me become a better magician and a deeper thinker. This book, [Transformations] will help you become a very smart magician. The routines are wonderful, the essays inspiring, and the messages profound." - Jeff McBride

"Larry Hass is not only a fantastic performer who puts meaning and love into the magic he performs, he’s also a lovely human being, which shines through and endears him to his audiences."Suzanne

"Thank you, Larry, for doing so much to help raise the intellectual level of our beloved Art of Magic!" - Juan Tamariz

"Larry Hass is an inspiring teacher and a joyful man to know."Teller

"Inspirations is a beguiling and thoughtful collection of essays and routines from one of magic’s progressive practitioners." - Rob Zabrecky

What will he teach?

Magicians typically think of magic in terms of close-up, stand-up, and stage. In this lecture, Lawrence Hass will show that there are at least seven distinct styles or venues of magic by teaching routines from his professional repertoire that are tailored for each of them.

The Intuition Test – Lawrence’s highly acclaimed borrowed deck, magician-fooling card mystery. Sleight-free and repeatable!

How to Find Your Other Half – Lawrence’s celebrated handling for Woody Aragon’s card routine, in which an overtly mathematical sequence is replaced with a free choice!

Blind Man’s Poker – A deep-fooling version of Bob Farmer’s “Tsunami.” It sold out quickly in 2008 when it was released as a limited manuscript. Now you can learn this professional routine and all of Lawrence’s latest work on it.

A Simple Gift – A go-to, “never-leave-the-house-without-it” piece of Gift Magic. Finally on video!

Walking Through Walls – A fast, flashy piece of coin magic, and a lesson in transforming a stunt into magic.

Showdown Poker – An entertaining, in-the-hands version of the Ten-Card Poker Deal. Perfect for walk-around!

The Banded Dollar Bill – Bob Neale’s unpublished method for folding a bill into an attractive band to encircle a packet of playing cards without tape or glue!

The Impossible Prediction, 3.0 – A deeply deceptive card prediction for the parlor, platform, or stage. Strong enough to close a show.

Tale of the Rabbi Magician – Utilizing a stand-up variation of Max Maven’s “Overdose,” this magical story is one of Lawrence’s signature effects.

Test Conditions Mind Reading – A fully realized theatrical experience of mind reading. A participant THINKS of any playing card and, without pumping, pre-show, or stooging, you name it.

Really professional, very informative, you can tell this guy has paid his dues. Way too many card tricks. Good card tricks. But card tricks are a dime a dozen.

Larry's Lecture had an interesting premise as he described many performing situations and gave us tricks that he has actually used in those venues. There is something for everyone here and I enjoyed his thinking. The only annoying part was his Eugene Berger mannerisms which he has inadvertently cloned into his own persona. The best trick was his intuition test which is a real magician fooler.

This was my first introduction to the work of Larry Hass, and my first impression was "Oh no, Eugene has cut his beard!".. I mean, insane! the intonations, the pronounciations, the silences, and even some facial expressions at the end of the phrases - I thought those can only be succesfully adopted by Eugene Burger's imaginable twin brother. One can also recognize Mr. Burger's influence in the heavy scripting.

Not all the tricks were for me, to be honest. Magicians often claim that magic happens in the audience's mind, but in reality magic all too often happens in the magician's mind when we convince ourselves of evoking some unbelievable sense of wonder. I feel, for the polite lay audience, the only plausible explanation of the "Simple gift" trick is the actual one. The trick of the "Rabbi Magician" just made no sense to me - a cheesy cheesy background music with a cheesy cheesy story (which, if true, gives little credit to its protagonists) just made me raise an eyebrow. A rabbi? Magician? Why magician? Couple of jumbo cards? Wtf? As a member of the lay audience I would probably think the huge cards have some sliding door or something, and end of the story. I wouldn't have been able to connect all the dots together into a coherent "wow" experience. (I know this has nothing to do with "jewishness" - a similar "Pope Magician" trick would puzzle me just the same). I would also seriously contest the idea Mr. Hass brought forward, that a magical story alone can compete with the experience of an unexplainable magical effect. Yes, Rene Lavand uses story telling to enhance his magic - but hey, what an actor, what a story teller he is!? Who can match that?! The story alone by itself won't do - again, open to debate.

All this would be enough to subtract at least one star, leaving the score at 4 stars.

BUT.

When the acted character of the "philosopher magician" was giving way to what I perceived to be the real Larry Hass - an ongoing energetic individual with sharp mind - the lecture was becoming very dynamic and interesting and most enjoyable. The ideas were indeed brilliant and thought-provoking. Also, several of the effects he presented were just impossibly good. The real Larry Hass moments and several of the effects he presented deserve 6 stars. Rounding them up with the 4 stars, I give it 5 stars and I would definitely recommend it.

Larry Hass Live Lecture Review Report this review

Simply Amazing! One of the very best lectures here on Penguin, everything here is practical and hard hitting. The teaching was fantastic. Larry took the right amount of time needed to go through all of the moves and handling. His story telling was great superb. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing this lecture and supporting Larry Hass. The moves are not difficult to do but working on your patter is the most important thing. Just take the time to watch this lecture and see what I mean.

Update: I recently emailed Larry and he sent me this - It is about creating a whole experience in which people exercise their own imagination and “play along with the play.”

Larry teaches I mean shows US! How to gift a memorable experience to the spectators.

Dr. Hass is one of magic's deepest thinkers. The effects that are taught are elegant, top notch, professional pieces. But more important is the focus on presentation, relationship building with the audience, and how our words and actions can bury the technical aspect and create a truly magical experience for the audience. Every magician, regardless of skill level or experience will benefit from the very practical thoughts Dr. Hass has to offer.

Great effects and insight into performance venues. I am adding 3 effects to my repertoire right now. Best lecture I have seen and I have a lot. Imagine a great and engaging effect where 30 people are all involved in it at the same time. I hope Dr. Hass will do more, I am definitely looking for his published works.

TEACHING GREAT MAGIC WITH EXCELLENCE! Report this review

Dr. Larry Hass is one of the best teachers in all of magic. His lecture gives a new understanding of different performance venues and how to perform in those venues. Everything that Dr. Hass teaches in this lecture is a worker that he actually performs in his daily repertoire. He also teaches deeper and more deceptive methods for presenting pieces of magic. Just watching Dr. Hass perform will help you to learn better speaking and presentation skills. I am currently working on four of the pieces that Dr. Hass teaches in this lecture. The Tale of the Rabbi Magician is one of the most beautiful and touching pieces of magic I have ever seen. That one magical piece alone is worth the price of this lecture. If you want to improve your performance skills and work in higher paying venues, you should get this lecture right now.

Wonderful, Insightful, Inspiring Report this review

I watced a number of Penguin live as well as other lectures, and this one is exceptional. Not only does Larry Hass provide workable material, very workable material, but he presents it in such a theatrically refined way that you just want to see what is next. Each piece is properly framed and he provides much information as to why it is framed as it is. Top recommendation and in summary:
Larry Hass nailed it.

Lectures within a lecture Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on June 5th, 2016
Larry Hass delivered a lecture within his lecture. You will find many card tricks and some tricks with cards. There's also a 'gift magic' trick leaving the person you're performing for with a souvenir.
But he expands his explanations with lots of credits and references. He explains the why of the script and handling. He explains how to bury the method more deeply and shows it. He talks about the structure of an act.
He frames all of this in a very useful way: by doing effects for particular performing situations.

In fact he starts his lecture by saying that we mostly think of types of performances in three ways: close-up, parlor, stage. But....being a much working professional myself, this is not the reality of things. Formal close-up is different from going from table to table at a party. Which is different from doing table magic at a gala dinner. Which is different from a seemingly casual after dinner performance. I've performed at the Castle a bunch of times and I know how the Parlour of Prestidigitation is a different beast than most venus I do stand-up, parlor type of magic in.
So framing the whole lecture like this and including all the aforementioned relevant topics for a performer, makes much sense to me.
He demonstrates tricks for different types of circumstances which helped me to re-think the type of effects I do in each situation. That re-thinking process happend form me on all of the levels I mentioned (structure, delivery, deep method as he calls it, etc.). So I wasn't just consuming new tricks, but I got much more out of it.
A refined, clear and engaging lecture!
