"The term "real-world" is bandied about in magicdom, but Paul Cummins understands what this word really means. He not only has traveled the underground, but he has plied his extensive knowledge in the "real world." He knows what works and why it works in this domain. His lecture is not only an exploration of tried-and-true abstractions, it is a festival of practical lessons. You will, trust me, learn solid ideas and tricks you will be able to use in and out of magicdom." - John Racherbaumer

"Paul’s lecture notes are filled with strong, well thought-out card magic. Every item is an audience-pleaser. The material on the multiple-location plot alone is worth the purchase price."Darwin Ortiz

"Paul is a very fine technician, but he is also concerned about entertaining his audiences, so you will find that these routines combine interesting (and sometimes difficult) methods with an understanding of how to make a routine commercial and memorable. This is a fine collection of card and coin material. I highly recommend it to close-up enthusiasts."Mike Close

"Even if other cardmen don’t use [the] routines as they are from beginning to end, they will benefit from the original bits and pieces, techniques, and handling finesses that are scattered throughout [the] explanations and that are the trademark of a thinking, experienced performer... [Paul’s] treatment of Roy Walton’s classic "Time Travelers" is outstanding, and [his] thoughts and conceptions relating to "mass discovery" routines are the best writing I’ve seen on this topic."J.K. Hartman

"Paul Cummins is one of the cleverest magicians I know. He comes up with amazing tricks that audiences love and backs it up with terrific performing style. He is also a superb sleight-of-hand artist."James Swain

"The magic of Paul Cummins is simple in method, direct and clear in plot, and packs a huge wallop on any audience (laypersons and magicians alike!). Unlike today’s contemporaries who use effects to highlight a "move," Paul is different. He only uses a move to make the effect more clear and highly visual (there is nothing "movey" looking in his magic). This is what creates magic! Paul’s magic is reminiscent of the late, great Eddie Fechter - eye popping, mind tingling magic that just happens! This is magic that is very visual and highly entertaining."Mike Gallo

"Paul performs his magic in a deliberate, unassuming style…it is strong magic, presented and performed cleanly and smoothly. The Cummins brand of magic is practical, baffling, performable, and within the reach of anyone with a basic card background. It is obvious that Paul has lived with his Magic, performed his routines for some time…the attention to detail, the little touches are evident throughout his work."Randy Wakeman

"You do a great lecture, something for every level of magic interest. Your multiple card location and side steal are worth the price of admission."Al The Only

What will he teach?

Flasher Almost self-working invisible card routine.

Stumped Three specatator-peeked cards are instantly named by the performer.

No Mercy Four indifferent cards change to duplicates of the spectator's selection, which immediately change into four aces, that immediately change into a single card - the selection again. Finally, the spectator finds the four aces simply by cutting the deck into four piles.

Punken Droker A topsy-turvy poker routine.

Just in Case A repeat card under and into box routine. This routine is modular and may be completed after any of five potential phases.

Old Faithful One of the most popular routines in Paul’s lecture, this is a fast paced, in-hands monte routine with multiple climaxes.

Aces to Order After one riffle shuffle the performer dead cuts to the four aces.

Another Sequestered Collectors An extremely direct and uncluttered version of the classic Collectors plot invented by Roy Walton and popularized by Ed Marlo. Includes a description of Paul’s rolling disclosure of the collected packet. Paul chose this routine to be the Bonus Card Trick on his coin magic video, Up In Smoke.

Personalization of J.K. Hartman’s Handshake A nearly-self working poker routine.

Fusillade The multiple selection routine.

He explains well on palming and side steal. Multiple selection routine is not difficult either.

Good Card Work and Effects Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on July 3rd, 2018
This is a lecture for card workers who are adept at sleight of hand. A lot of advanced card stuff cannot be done for lay audiences because, let's fact it, you can't hit the moves every time. Mr. Cummins' work is advanced *workable* material, in my view. What I mean by that is that this is about as advanced as you can get as a working magician and still be able to keep consistency (there are, of course, exceptions to this). There are culls, Stuart Gordon doubles, Hofzinzer spread cull controls, palms, side steals, etc. Mr. Cummins does all of the moves expertly. As he states in his lecture, he works at a bar and does magic, so a significant portion of his stuff in this lecture depends on having a surface to work on. But there is also some in the hands stuff, too. Mr. Cummins' performance style is heavily dependent on the methods/effects of his magic. What I mean by that is that he does not appear to be a *showman*. You will not learn any (or at least many) clever lines here, or deep philosophical points on magic; he is not a "comedy magician." But he has chops and, thus, his magic is good. His work reminds me a quote from Allan Ackerman, "I want perfection, not misdirection." My favorite effect on the lecture is his version of collectors where the deck does not come into contact with the collector cards. Where will I perform it? Who the hell knows. But its good. I also enjoyed being fooled by his version of *card under drink.* In closing, Mr. Cummins has chops and his material is deceptive. It is difficult: With 1 being the easiest and 10 being the hardest, I would put his work at a 7.5. But his work is realistically *doable* in working situations if you are proficient with cards, and the effects are good takes on classic plots. So I recommend this lecture for the card guys our there.

Solid, Effective Card Miracles Report this review

Mr. Cummins presentations and explanations are first class. He presents card magic that has been honed over years of performances in real world close-up situations. His calm, straight forward and soft-spoken manner is so disarming the spectators have no chance other than to shake their heads in wonder as he presents one KILLER effect after another. I purchased both sets of Mr. Cummins' FASDIU Lecture Notes several years ago. Privately, I wondered whether some of the material was actually workable. Well.... he demonstrates some of this material on this Penguin Live Lecture. For instance, he teaches in this lecture his routines of No Mercy and Card Under Box. Even when I knew what to look for I was badly fooled. This is not only a testament of how his timing and teaching has been perfected but just how strong these routines are. These routines are not pipe dreams from some millennial who picked up a deck of cards 2 years ago. This man is a LEGEND and everyone can benefit from his teachings of fairly easy techniques to his simple plot construction to his flawless execution. If you want to be able to pick up any deck of cards at any time and BLOW SPECTATORS MINDS listen and learn from this master of card magic. Bravo Penguin for inviting Paul Cummins to lecture. Hope you do a second follow-on lecture in the future.

Quality lecture Report this review

An excellent lecture by a master. While there was some really strong card work in the lecture, it was some of the small tips that were really useful e.g. on the side steal and a spec cuts to the aces.

A great lecture by a real worker Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on November 6th, 2017
Paul is a real worker. He has spent many nights behind the bar actually doing the magic he teaches. If you would like to learn practical magic that can be done "from a shuffled deck in use" this is the lecture for you. Strong magic, real world methods, true effects.

One of the best lectures I have seen from Penguin. Get this and one (or both) of Paul's books and you are set for a very long time.

Fantastic Report this review

This was one of my all time favourite lectures! Everything Mr. Cummins is teaching is so great! Since years I tried to get everything he is publishing but to see him in a live lecture is another level. How amazing it must be to have a chance to see him under real world conditions? Probably we will never touch a deck, because only a limited circle of people will be able to be so great! Many thanks to the PM Team and to MR. Cummins!
