Lately my main complaint about most of the tricks put out in the magic market is that they aren't
workers. You won't actually do them more than a handful of times in real life. Either they're not
that strong, they have terrible angles, the set-up is impractical, or the like. This is the first
trick I've bought in the last few months that is an actual worker that you will do all the time.
One thing I do want to point out off the bat is that the first phase is really weak. First
of all, he has the worst version of the monte move I've seen in a long time. Secondly, even if he
was doing a better version of it it's not meant to be done so overtly. It's meant to be much more
casual. That being said, in this particular trick it's not as bad. There something to be said for
starting off this trick with a not so convincing transpo and then building up from there, but I
would still jump straight to phase two. From there on it's really strong and people understand
there's no such thing as a mixture unless you have two of each color.
The moves are very
well taught with great close ups on the more complicated moves. To be honest a beginner is probably
going to find this trick too difficult and the more advanced magician probably already can do most
of the moves in his sleep since these are common moves for the most part (though I should point out
his version of the c*** looked fishy to me. You'd be better off with the standard version of it).
One thing I always ask myself when someone puts out their version of a standard trick is
"Is there a reason this trick was published? Is it significantly different from previous versions of
this trick in a good way? Will people who already do a version of this trick gain anything by
learning this version" The answer to these questions are yes less than 20% of the time but I'm proud
to say that this is within the 20% that do deserve to be published.
This trick is highly
recommended for the intermediate or advanced magician. It's impromptu, has very good angles, and for
the most part uses moves you already know so it shouldn't take you too long to learn.
A
beginner should expect to spend a lot of time learning this, but consider it time well spent because
these are very useful moves and this is a trick that you will be doing for the rest of my life.

This is really just Carey teaching his version of a routine that creates the classic oil and water
effect, but his routine is a real stunner, particularly the final phase, which I will absolutely be
using to close my own oil and water routine. The instruction itself is less than ten minutes - this
is not a negative or a positive, but a statement of fact so that you know what you're getting. Carey
gives very little instructions on the moves and techniques used, instead focusing on the routine
itself. This has upsides and downsides - the downside is that beginners might feel a bit lost
because there is insufficient information in the video to learn the techniques Carey uses. The
upside is that more experienced magicians don't have to be subjected to explanations of moves that
they've seen and done thousands of times before. It's a tradeoff. Also: The moves Carey uses in the
routine are not particularly difficult, but require some comfort with basic sleight of hand
techniques. Ultimately, I very much enjoyed this video and absolutely will be including his "slow
motion" final phase in my own presentations.

I've seen other oil and water routines that sort of left me underwhelmed. But John Carey's Slow
Motion Oil and Water is the best version I've ever seen! John does a great job of teaching the
sleights, but I'll have to watch it a few times and practice a bit to get it all down. I think it
looks like this is worth the work. Great job John!

This is a great version of the oil and water routine you can learn to differentiate yourself from
the rest. I like the gradual separation process this routine features at the end. There are some
moves I wasn't familiar with that he teaches that I can utilize for other presentations. Oil and
water is a classic card trick, and this is a great addition to the other methods out there.

I have never found an oil and water that is clean enough or doesn’t require a ton of finger
flicking. This is a brilliant variation that happens slow and clean. It will fool the toughest
skeptic but it will also entertain the most comical. Everything you’re looking for in an oil an
water

John Carey presents good tricks and explains them well. I find the magic to be easy to learn and
present.

I've seen a lot of John Carey's effects from his books. I love Oil and Water routines.
This is a
really strong MULTI-PHASE routine that keeps building up till the killer ending.
Very easy
to do. Almost no sleights and he rely's on more psychology than sleight of hand.
Really
strong effect for laymen!

Oil and water is a classic trick that can be confusing or require a lot of finger flicking or both.
This is version is clean, straightforward and builds from a single transposition to the climax where
all the cards separate. There is some finger flicking required, if you're an experienced card guy
you'll be doing this right away, if not you will learn some moves that will come in handy as you
progress so learn them and practice.
This is a packet trick that can be done from a
borrowed deck, there is nothing that can't be done in the open and once learned you will be ready to
perform at a moments notice.
Also, as taught you can use any phase stand-alone or to
supplement your current oil and water routine. You can also stop at any phase if you are table
hopping and the food arrives.
I was provided a free copy of this download in return for an
honest and unbiased review.

John does an excellent job teaching you how to perform his version of a classic trick. He clearly
explains the simple sleights required to make the magic happen. This is a good lesson for beginners.
If you like the demo video, you'll like this trick. It's easy & fun to perform.
