This is an okay trick. I really wanted to like this more than I do, but the trick is not as
advertised. First off, the participant makes only two rolls and not three rolls. Second, the
description of the effect says "Occasionally you might miss. But much of the time you won’t." This
is also not true because you will actually miss more than 50% of the time. Third, the description
says:
"You ask the participant which die they would like you to reveal first. You ask them
to visualize the die under the chosen hand…
… and immediately reveal the number on that
die!"
This is also not true! The VAST majority of the time you cannot just immediately
reveal the number on that die, you have to do fishing on multiple levels to get the answer. All in
all, I like some of the thinking behind the effect, some things are clever, and I can add some of
the things I've learned into the mentalism tricks I already use, but it does not justify the price,
and for that reason I don't recommend it. On a side note, it might have been better if he did a
video download tutorial with actual performances and maybe I would have liked it better, but we
don't get that luxury either for the price we pay.
I've no problem with your review. But just to be fair, you're incorrect about a few things though I'll only mention two of them in the interest of protecting the effect. There actually is 3 rolls....first with both dice and then with one. There's no fishing on "multiple levels" - just one statement, that's it - unless it's 7.
If you feel that the effect is over-priced for you, that's fair. As a fellow who once performed at paid events exhaustively, I can only say that I would've happily paid twice the price to have this in my working repertoire had I not created it myself. My prices will always reflect what the material is worth to me coming from that perspective. To be honest, I strongly feel that many 'secrets' need to be priced much higher than what most seem to be going for these days. But that's just my opinion. :)
Sudo, I admire that you took the time to comment on my review personally. As someone who has purchased many effects and has been performing magic for a little over a decade, I totally agree that some effects are worth more than the price that's paid... Assuming it's actually added to your repertoire. With that said, I also understand that it's just a part of the game to spend money on magic, tricks, and effects that we end up not liking or using in the end. Over the years I just got better at choosing effects that I would be more likely to use or add to my already existing routines. Your trick just happens to be on the fence for me, but it is something I really want to like. It is possible that I am misunderstanding a few points that you truly understand well, and these subtleties probably make all the difference for you. If it is possible for you to add or include a brief video tutorial with live performances to our purchase I would be extremely satisfied and I would be very likely to update/change my review on that alone.
Briefly going back to my review, I could argue a few more points or have an additional response to your response, but it would probably be more appropriate to have that conversation over a private message. I would pm you over The Magic Cafe, but I have been having login problems. Is there a preferred way to communicate with you?
All the best,
Jon
Hi Jon.
I appreciate that you took my response in the way it was intended - thanks! I'm not the snarky sort. :) As for video instruction, it will never happen. I simply don't have the proper equipment or editing skills to do such a thing justice, though, I wish I could. Believe me, a video shoot would be a lot easier and less work for me than all the time it takes to write everything up.
I would be more than happy to chat with you in writing or through video chat (preferred) using either google hangouts or skype. You can reach me at: talkwithsudo@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you!
