Drew Backenstoss' LIVE ACT performance was excellent. Fun, entertaining, mysterious and polished.
Truly a great showman and a terrific performance.
I believe Drew is one of the rising
stars in mentalism and will eventually become one of the greats at the top of the field.
After the show, the 3 + hours of conversation with Dan, discussion about Drew's philosophy, many
insights and recommendations, as well as the explanations for the effects begins. This is just my
opinion, but I found this part a struggle to get through. Drew is very detailed when explaining
things, but overly so. I kept saying to myself, just get to the point already. It was like asking
someone for directions to get somewhere and after 15 minutes they are still talking - telling you
all the things they think you need to know, when if they had just gotten to the point you could have
walked to where you wanted to go in 5 minutes.
I do understand wanting to explain important
things in enough detail. And the flip side is not good either, just glossing over things. But you
can over do explaining things and doing so gets tedious.
The feedback about my tendency to over-explain is valid.\r\n\r\nAs I said near the beginning of lecture, I\'ve never done anything remotely close to a lecture before so I erred on the side of \"too much\" over \"too little.\" I would like to clarify my reasoning though...\r\n\r\nBuilding on your analogy of asking for directions - I guess it all depends on what you want out of the journey. Do you want to reach the destination as quickly as possible? Or do you what to know about the potential hazards as well as the beautiful views present on the journey that some travelers are unaware of?\r\n\r\nBecause this is the first exposure that most people have to me and my work I felt the need to be open and honest about where I work, how much I work, and the inspirations behind my work. \r\n\r\nI was also conscious of the reality that viewers of the lecture would have a wide variety of familiarity with the concepts discussed (and performance experience in general) - some could reach the destination with bare bone directions while others would need extensive guidance.\r\n\r\nLastly, I strongly believe that its the aggregate of all the little details that make for a convincing and entertaining performance. I appreciate your opinion that I\'m a \"rising star\" and that the performance was, \"Fun, entertaining, mysterious and polished.\" I humbly contend that I accomplished those outcomes by focusing on details while constructing the act. I passed them all along as a way to encourage others to do the same with their own work :)\r\n\r\nBest,\r\n\r\nDrew
