You know what you're receiving and it works beautifully! I love Mental Dice as well, but not having to peek anything makes this perfect for me. When the die is thrown, you get an immediate signal. The receiver vibrates as many times as the upwards number on the die, then repeats several times, so you don't have to worry if you missed the first time. You can also blindly stop the vibrations any time you want in order to save battery. As mentioned in the trailer, the receiver does notify you when it's connected to the die/dice, low battery, etc.

Pairing this with the 3 Mental Dice is an awesome feature as well. This will take a little more time to get familiar with. It's the same idea; the receiver will vibrate the number of each individual die, then repeat the sequence. It's a very simple code to discern which color die you're reading. This is not as fast as using the visual receiver included with Mental Dice, but the pro is not having to peek anything at all.
Note that you can not pair your receiver with both the included die and Mental Dice at the same time; it has to be one or the other.
The most common question seems to be if you can purchase just the receiver. I feel that the price reflects the receiver, so I'm not worried about it. Just my opinion, though.
