Think this one is going to reside in the drawer of unused magic. For some reason the cards chosen
are easily remembered cause they resemble a small straight. I've been busted by my co-workers who
will say something like "I was thinkin of the 3 but thought I saw a four of hearts in there too."
Oh well. I hate being busted- but this is a classic.
Hey, Josh Burch here. Thanks for picking up the trick! I understand your frustration and thought I'd offer some feedback. I totally understand that it probably won't change your mind at all.
It sounds like you are allowing the spectator to look at the cards for too long initially. I would recommend explaining what they need to do before the cards are fanned, then only showing the initial cards long enough for them to think of one and no longer. As you said, this uses a classic principle and has stood the test of time.
In all of my performances of this effect, I haven't really had a similar reaction to what you describe, where they name a second card. If I received that kind of reaction my response would likely be to underline that there are only four cards left and that one has clearly vanished.
I might even lean into the four of hearts claim as well and say, "That's odd. I never had a four."
Sorry, Josh. Laypeople aren't stupid. I just showed the trailer to my 72 year old mother (who knows nothing about magic, and only watched the video once) and even she knew what was happening. I think the people who are complaining about this trick have a very valid gripe.
