I sit here a tad guilty because I've sat with some of this material for a couple years now. When Tom
released his lecture notes, I was fortunate to grab a copy just based on Jim Ryan's name. This was a
name I had only heard Tom Mullica and a couple others mention. I didn't really know the history
around the name.
Well, Jim's material was based on early Chicago style close-up. It's
brilliantly constructed and fun (fun is certainly the key word here).
However, while
reading the notes, there were a few things I had wished I could watch. I would find myself saying "I
wonder how that looked or played for people?"
Well, luckily we are now in a place where Tom
was able to come in and do it all. It's really a wonderful tribute to his late mentor and
beautifully shot. The explanations are excellent!
You get the lecture, the lecture notes
This Will Kill You and a full performance. The performance is just excellent. It's a way to see this
material move in a show, how it's strung together and how Tom navigates all of it.
I've
personally been waiting to see this lecture for a long time. It's well worth deep study and time.
Side note: Erik is 100% correct at the beginning. Lectures like this one are important for
the magic community. Tom is helping keep Jim's material alive for future generations and creating a
real historical record of it on video. I really appreciate these lectures for that reason.
