I'm a big fan of OOTW, but certain discrepancies discourage me from the more traditional methods.
Erik's treatment of the premise did not disappoint.
First, the work. As referenced in other
reviews, there is some practice necessary. One review even mentions that such a move can't be
learned with such a quick tutorial. I disagree. Granted, I was familiar with the necessary maneuver
to make this effect go, I found Erik's tutorial on it (at least a 10 minute explanation - that's 30%
of the total video here) very inciteful with some ideas on it I hadn't picked up from previous
sources.
Erik lays out all the mechanics for the viewer. He's not rushed. He even doubles
back to emphasize some of the finer points. For what you pay for this single effect, you get
knowledge that can be applied to numerous other applications. The ROI here is great.
And if
you aren't quite up to snuff with the initial method, Erik's alternative is an excellent option that
can still look very clean.
The effect is exactly as advertised: spectator shuffles and
freely selects. You can't get much cleaner than that. All of your handling is explained via the
patter, so there aren't any unnecessary movements.
To the rest of the video: Erik supplies
ideas for patter, credits and cites methods appropriately, and even explains his thinking for the
misdirection (which I think was an excellent addition).
If I could rate it higher than a 5,
I would.
