Joshua Jay’s Cylinder and Coins take on Ramsay’s classic effect could
be a beautiful version of
it but unfortunately involves too many angle problems.
First, the use of the dollar bill
replacing a leather cylinder creates a switch out that would normally be unnecessary. In one of
Joshua’s initial videos he clearly is seen switching the bills under his table. The handkerchief
switch is unnatural. Why would you use a handkerchief to polish off a little plastic ring?
Second, overall angles are poor. You need a table of the correct height and have you audience
sitting directly in front of it at eye level to successfully perform this effect. That issue
severely limits you to performing this effect impromptu. Now, that in and of itself is not a
problem. However, having to use a “set table stage” so to speak detracts from psychological
influence of performing this without a “pre set” pretext.
The watch sleight vanish is
terrible. Even in his video demonstration you can easily see the coin stuck under Joshua’s watch
band. I would be compelled to use a Slydini coin vanish instead.
The three nesting coins
themselves feel cheap to me. The coin stack came unglued out of the box. So, I will be calling you
about that issue.
Overall I think the Joshua has created a pretty well thought out effect
when done under specific visual conditions. If you perform a lot of “set stage parlor or video shows
then this effect can be amazing. Otherwise you will be hard pressed to develop alternatives to the
sleights and switches to pull this off successfully.
