Joshua Jay and Vanishing Inc. have taken a classic of magic and completely revamped it for a modern audience. This incredible professional kit gives you everything you need to add one of the best close up magic tricks of the last century into your working set.

John Ramsay's classic "Cylinder and Coins" routine embodies what makes close-up magic so special. Many would argue that it is a rite of passage for magicians in the same vein as the Cups and Balls or an Ace Assembly. However, as it is not as well known and the props have started to feel dated in recent years, it is rarely performed by modern magicians.

It is truly a shame that audiences are being robbed of an effect filled with so many moments of genuine surprise and astonishment. So, Joshua Jay set out to create an innovative and contemporary version of this beloved close up routine.

While the basic idea stays the same, nearly every other aspect has changed. This includes brand new props and a shocking surprise ending that brings the whole routine to a perfect conclusion. Check out the full performance in the trailer above to see it in action before continuing.

Key Details:

Instead of using four coins, Joshua Jay's "Cylinder and Coins" uses just three coins. This helps make the trick less repetitive and eliminates many handling issues. As magic wands and leather cylinders are out-of-place props in modern magic acts, they have been removed as well.

In this version, the cylinder is represented by a rolled-up dollar bill. This feels very fair and doesn't look like a magic prop. You don't have to use an American bill either. Each kit comes with the gimmicks needed to prepare any bill.

The cork that would transpose with the coins in John Ramsay's original routine would often need extra explanation to justify its use. So, Joshua Jay has decided to use a finger ring. It's not only immediately recognizable, but helps make the necessary moves even easier.

When it comes to the coins themselves, Vanishing Inc. is incredibly proud to include custom-made offerings. For the first-time ever, Joshua Jay's "Triad Coins" are available in a replica Morgan Dollar version. This is not only the perfect size for performing "Cylinder and Coins", but makes all the vanishes smooth and easy.

Anyone who has ever performed the original "Cylinder and Coins" routine is also aware that the included stack of coins was generally static. Joshua Jay's "Cylinder and Coins" adds an entirely new dynamic element that drastically increases the fairness and openness of the effect.

This special "Cylinder and Coins" kit has been custom-crafted with the exceptional quality you've come to expect from Vanishing Inc. It offers everything you need to start learning and performing this remarkable routine. That includes the revolutionary stack of coins and dollar-size "Triad Coins" set, as well as the finger rings, bill gimmicks, and the very special something needed for the end of the routine. These professional quality props will last you a lifetime.

Don't wait any longer. Add one of the best close up magic tricks of the last 100 years to your set today.

Look, this was one of those things I bought but was pretty sure i'd be taking advantage of Penguins return policy. I gotta tell you, this thing is sick! Typically repclicz anything really bum me out however given how expensive morgan ramsey stacks are i thought this would be a great in. Not going to lie though the price tag still gave me anxiety.
Let me start by saying, not for nothing but this was probably my favorite package i've ever got to open. I feel like thought went into figuring out how to package to give each individual prob its own moment in the unpacking process.
I have got into the instructions too deeply yet so i'm not exactly sure how much i'll use some of Joshua Jays extra touches but intriguing props none the less.
Obv the most important thing are the coins. For my style these are perfect. I use slick shinny morgan's and If for whatever reason i wanted to use 3 of those instead of the replicas they would 100% match the stack close enough that no one would ever realize the discrepancy.
All in all, i'm sure a lot of you are on the fence. This thing is sick and it is a great way to acquire a beautiful ramsey stack for a fraction of the cost. Not to mention the teaching and other props. Fantastic job JJ but not i am still not going to shop at VI. penguin till i die.

The coin set(s) include are absolutely top notch and if you were to use this for a standard Cylinder and Coin routine, it's fantastic. Now in general I do like the leather cylinder and cork that's typically used but the idea of using a dollar bill to make the effect seem really organic is also a great idea in my opinion.

Now the deduction of a star from my rating has to do with the final reveal. I love the idea of a final load for this and a shot of liquor seems like the perfect choice. But the star deduction comes because in order to perform the routine as Josh does, you really can't do it close up and you'll find yourself in a very angle sensitive position. If you watch Josh perform this in the video, that is the ideal distance and angle to be performing. It would probably work well in a parlor setting with people seated 5 or 6 feet away but if you're looking for something to do seated at the same table as you, you would need to find a different method for the final reveal. That being said, the trick has enough built in misdirection that coming up with an alternative method for the final load wouldn't be overly difficult but it's something people may want to know before buying a fairly expensive set.

Too many angle issues. Coin stack defective. Report this review

Joshua Jay’s Cylinder and Coins take on Ramsay’s classic effect could
be a beautiful version of it but unfortunately involves too many angle problems.

First, the use of the dollar bill replacing a leather cylinder creates a switch out that would normally be unnecessary. In one of Joshua’s initial videos he clearly is seen switching the bills under his table. The handkerchief switch is unnatural. Why would you use a handkerchief to polish off a little plastic ring?

Second, overall angles are poor. You need a table of the correct height and have you audience sitting directly in front of it at eye level to successfully perform this effect. That issue severely limits you to performing this effect impromptu. Now, that in and of itself is not a problem. However, having to use a “set table stage” so to speak detracts from psychological influence of performing this without a “pre set” pretext.

The watch sleight vanish is terrible. Even in his video demonstration you can easily see the coin stuck under Joshua’s watch band. I would be compelled to use a Slydini coin vanish instead.

The three nesting coins themselves feel cheap to me. The coin stack came unglued out of the box. So, I will be calling you about that issue.

Overall I think the Joshua has created a pretty well thought out effect when done under specific visual conditions. If you perform a lot of “set stage parlor or video shows then this effect can be amazing. Otherwise you will be hard pressed to develop alternatives to the sleights and switches to pull this off successfully.
