First, let me say I'm just a hobbyist. Second, I like some of Craig's stuff. I hesitated to write
this review, but since I'm having such a problem with it, thought I should warn others.
MOST
IMPORTANT: YOU NEED A PHONE FOR THIS TRICK!!!
This little tidbit is left out of the promos. As
stated, I'm a hobbyist, but I get the impression this was intentionally left out because not a lot of
magicians like tricks that use phones. There are two ways to use the phone, but you will need it.
One method is to get the person(s) to use their phone to use a site to help them choose the most
least likely combination card and number in the deck. The second is to "help remember" the choice on
your phone's notes pad. Both methods are necessary though to do the trick. I don't mind using a
phone personally as long as it seems natural, but I'll leave that up to everyone's own preferences.
But the fact that this is left out of the promo videos to me is very deceptive. I know deception is
part of magic, but this seems to be "eating your own". Disappointed Craig has done this, and
disappointing Penguin allows it. To be fair to Penguin, this is not a trick they helped produce. But
they still should be more transparent with their customers as to what products they are selling from
other companies.
Next, the instructions: They are a convoluted mess. There is a 6 min tutorial
that is supposed to get you going quickly, but it won't. Craig does a split screen interview with
another magician that discusses how great the trick is with a brief attempt to explain it, but they
invoke things that have been discussed elsewhere with a brief synopsis. You're not learning anything
step by step. The rest of the video is a jumbled mess. At one point, they even splice in a scene in
an attempt to clarify an issue, but only go off on another long tangent. It is lacking in clarity
and cohesiveness. There is never any step-by-step that I have seen and have gotten so lost and
frustrated, I can't sit through the whole thing at once. I've almost given up on this trick
entirely. I think I got enough of the concept though on my multiple viewings that there is a good
trick here,(otherwise it would have gotten 1 star) but I think most are going to have to do a lot of
digging to find out the way to make it work. There is a claim this can be done without using a phone
at all, but I'm not seeing it.
As I said, I'm not a seasoned performer, so maybe this is all on
me. But the phone omission is a major problem for me. The bad instructions seem to be a thing for
Petty, and this combination is going to make me rethink buying anything else from him going forward.
Which is too bad since I LOVE Cheater Chips, but even that had instructional problems. He seems to
have great ideas. I'm learning Destiny Deal currently, and again having instruction difficulties. It
seems good though and I think i've worked it out. I don't know if he's rushing things or doesn't
care, but its leaving the impression on me that it is a money grab. I hope he sees this and gets
some assistance with it. I'm hoping Penguin starts paying more attention to his production values as
well even though they may have nothing to do with the videos as well. It's their reputation for the
products they sell on the line too.
Good Points. I like Craig as a teacher. But for me, he explains far too many details and talks too much. He repeats himself too often. In the digital age, repetitions are unnecessary since you can always go back in the video.
