Here's the nitty-gritty of the DVD.
1. Don't expect mind-blowing magician foolers. You
will not find that here. This is magic tailored for social purposes with laypeople--to share in
whatever light you see fit.
Technically speaking, you should be able to lie/deceive and be
able to pull off extremely basic sleight of hand (on just a few of the effects really). In other
words, no knuckle-busters (unlike Revolutionary Coin Magic) are in this project.
2. The
effects and methods are all clear (if you've watched his youtube channel--you'll know what I mean).
The explanations are precise and quick.
3. Not all of the effects are magical. Some seem
to be very mischievous, others are more like stunts, and some are like spectacles. The idea is to
elicit a strong emotional response from people--and being pranky, using a gag, etc are other ways of
doing so. I think Jay is trying to get magicians to include other ways to impress, flirt, etc other
than using the traditional approach of magic.
4. The best thing that I got was a clarity
of how you can frame your magic in a way that is on the off-beat (if that made sense). Seemingly
impromptu and situational with the potential get people's attention. This idea of the "bend" is an
interesting take and how one might approach doing magic in social situations like work, bars, and
schools. The new theory is something that I can appreciate.
5. There is a re-hash of a few
effects, but those are the ones that needed gimmicks before (Zero Gravity, Descendent, Hijacked, and
Vanishink) and the gimmicks come with it.
6. It's well produced and the essays that came
with it are interesting (strikes me as "Beyond Secrets: part Deux"). It's neat to have quotes and
bits of theory between effects.
I would highly recommend this--remember that method is
secondary to the effect.
