I remember the first time that I heard Eugene lecture. in the mid 80s. It was a mystical
experience. He was so different from every other lecturer I had heard. He pushed the attendees to
think about their magic in ways that no one else I had ever heard did.
He was always very
kind, without being disingenuous. He and I worked a small convention together and he spoke very
highly of my act, while still offering some great advice. I have made it a point to get everything
that I could of his.
It is rare for a magic book to bring a tear, yet Mac King's introduction
did just that. We are all sad at the loss of a great thinker, but happy that we can "visit" one
more time with "the bearded one." There is real magic in these pages. Not the latest toy or
contraption, but real magic. You don't often find that, yet from Eugene it was his life's work.
Buy this book, read this book, think about this book, then read it again. It will pay rich
dividends not just in Magic, but in life. Then buy everything else that Eugene did (two Penguin
lectures). We miss you Eugene, but we thank you for all you did for the art, for our lives, and for
those spectators who, when seeing you, saw what magic could really be like.
