We practitioners of the magical arts often employ the terminology "magician's thinking" in the
course of conversations to infer something negative regarding our perspective on certain issues.
I'd like to say that Matt Mello has employed "true" magician's thinking in engineering Energy
Coins--in a positive sense, like the past legends of conjuring, by imagining a whole different
approach to a prop, effect, or gimmick, and coaxing from his peers remarks akin to "Now, why didn't
I think of that!" In this day and age of "I hate arts and crafts and expect all of my
props/gimmicks to be manufactured for me" mentality, it's refreshing to discover someone who is
attuned to "true" magician's thinking. Who "retires to his dusty Victorian workshop, takes whatever
is at hand and creates something uncommon from that which has been thought to be common".
Matts idea here is ridiculously simple (probably why no one else thought of it first, and should
be an eye-opener for performers as to how our audiences are likely to reason), and therefore demands
a strong presentation to breathe life and mystery into an otherwise bland demonstration. I don't
use the initial mind-screw concerning the weight of the coins as I feel it "can" hint to the gimmick
in play to an astute spectator (old "magician's thinking"--running when not being chased, but I
intentionally pander to perfection). I also opted to trade out the gimmick I received from Matt for
one from another manufacturer as I didn't feel that the "relief" on the gimmick matched well enough
the details on the half dollar I was using. All is well now. Although I knew the method before I
purchased, and had the gimmick already in my possession, I believed Matt deserved to be compensated
for his originality here, and had some valuable handling tips to offer as well that made the
purchase justifiable. I would recommend you do the same!
This is something I carry on me
all the time for "impromptu," short, quick, jaw-dropping mental-magic demonstrations. Put some
thought into this, make it your own, and watch eyes glaze over in bewilderment! I highly recommend
it--this IS magic!!!
