"As always, Curtis brings a devastating clarity to coin magic, providing visual moments of impossibility that are sometimes dizzying to behold. Fearless in his sleight of hand, Curtis also has the key quality that many technicians lack: an intelligent personality that is driven to entertain his audiences. Perhaps most importantly for those who are just starting to study Curtis's material, he is a "big picture" performer: he carefully choreographs the individual moments that make up a larger routine, he recognizes the subtleties that make such moments work, and he deploys years of psychological and philosophical ruminating that allows all of the pieces to work together as a whole and create truly amazing magic."- Kainoa Harbottle

"Curtis is my hero in coin magic. I got inspired by him a lot. He showed me his coin box routine few years ago, it changed my mind about coin box. If you want to become a "Boxer", this is the routine you can’t miss."- Max Li

"I hate coin magic. Like, I [bleeping] HATE coin magic. I hate all the stupid hand transfers. I hate all the stupid coins being pulled from elbows and knees. I hate everything about it.
I [bleeping] love Curtis Kam."- Tyler Wilson

What will he teach?

Formal Close Up, ala the Magic Castle’s Close Up Room. Also suitable for standup and parlor.

RAINMAKER: Starts with a new way to produce a coin, establishes his character and opens a creative space for the act to exist. This is Geoff Latta’s "Trick with Three Coins" melded with other effects (it’s better if you don’t know beforehand) and ending with the release of something that coin experts have been eagerly awaiting, a new and novel illusion known only as "the Drip".

PUKASTICK: A signature comedy and character presentation for Dick Zimmerman’s "Slippery Stones".

XBOX: This is it. Never before released in its entirety, the routine that energized today’s Okito Box movement. Hailed by experts as, “the best Okito Box routine ever”, XBOX not only includes just the very best effects possible with this prop, but it improves on each of them, introduces new moves, and defines an entirely new way to handle the box.

THE TEAR: Curtis’ personal handling of the classic cigarette paper effect, which closes his close up and standup shows with a smile, a tear, and flush of inspiration. He did not want to tip this, but since it was the closing moment of his Castle Act, we convinced him he had to.

CUPBORED: Simon Aronson’s brilliant conception made to play bigger and bolder for Parlor/Standup performance. This deep mystery closes Curtis Kam’s current standup act.

Who is he?

Known to magicians as the hands behind the acclaimed Palms Of Steel video series, Curtis Kam has successfully led a secret life as a professional stage performer, illusion designer, magic consultant, author, lecturer, script doctor, product reviewer, convention organizer, teacher and trial attorney. This act includes all of the material that coin experts across the country have been asking for. He's going to tip it all!

Whether or not you ever do any of these tricks, it's worth having just for the performance and explanations. Curtis is always creative and has put together a great act. Listening to him talk about structure and performance situations and such was super helpful too.
I love his Okito Box routine. It's certainly not a beginner routine, but doesn't seem like it would be difficult technically. It's a lengthy routine with many steps and working parts, so it'll certainly take some work to be able to do this. He tips where he got his Okito Box (I've got the same one and it's definitely the best) and other props.
Opening coin trick is great - to do it like Kam, you'll have to put together some things.
Second trick - Puka Stick - again, you'll have to make it, but it should be pretty easy if you have moderate woodworking skills. This one is easy, and you'll need to find your own presentation, but great thinking here.
The Tear - a classic with some interesting handlings.
His final trick, plays big - great adaptation. This is one that I want to do for sure!
Love how he took a table trick and made it stand up - it'll play anywhere now.

One of the great things about this video is how much bibliography he adds. All along the way, he gives original sources for everything. The great thing is it fills in a lot of back story. Downside: my "books/videos to get" has grown significantly after watching this.

Thanks Curtis for putting out a great video - as I said, just having the performance is worth it. Watching the explanations, along with hearing Curtis and Dan talking about it was very helpful.

GET. THIS. VIDEO!

Great Lecture Report this review

This was a very enjoyable lecture by a seasoned professional. The variety of effects is excellent for anyone who does close up/standup walk around type performance, I bought this for the XBOX routine because I'm an Okito box geek. I will say that this is a great routine that fits Curtis very well but seems a little too flourishy for my style. That's more a comment on my lack of ability and not a criticism of Curtis. Recommended if you are an Okito box geek or just like great close up and stand up magic!

Curtis Kam is a master of coin magic, one of the most challenging branches of sleight of hand. But his Magic Castle Act also features sleightless card magic, his "Puka Stick" routine and a handling of Leipzig's "Tear up with a Twist". Great magic, inspired by Geoff Latta, Nate Leipzig, Al Koran, David Roth and others, plus a stand up handling of Simon Aronson's Shuffle Bored. His Okito box routine and explanation are a virtual encyclopedia of techniques for this prop. Practical magic with intelligent presentations!

i am in love with coin magic, this act is amazing

rainmaker: a great opener, personally my favorite because of the story but to do this routine your gunna have to have lots of stuff curtis has gotten custom made

pukastick: barely goes over it so i was dissapointed

xbox: the best okito box routine, is challenging but has many surprises that is amazing

tear: simple yet effective

cupbored: i love the presentation and will add this to my repetoire even though im not a card guy

4 stars for barely any information on pukastick and how 3 things for rainmaker need to be custom made by a jeweller

Worth it just to see the show Report this review

You may not do a single effect from this act, but you should get it. The only other lecture that is David Williamson's. Both of these guys are so good at their craft that you'd be a fool not to study their acts or even just watch them perform.

Curtis shares where he acquired his props, alternatives to them, and how they're set up and staged before the show. All of the effects are attainable; however, the coin work is technical and deliberate effort will be needed. The Okito box and rainmaker routines are exceptional.

The choreography of the Puka stick/Slippery Rocks is not unique. The patter is though. You will not be able to copy his patter; however, it will spark some creative ideas.

The torn & restored cigarette paper shows the strength of a straight forward effect with a great story.

Shuffleboard is scaled up with a larger prediction and a shuffle which can be seen from the back of the room, but is the same otherwise.

Curtis does a great job crediting and referencing sources.

This Lecture Probably Shouldn’t Exist Report this review

I am amazed Curtis Kam has chosen to publish this act. This material seems too strong, deep and rich to be released in a medium so immediate, accessible and affordable as a streaming lecture-- but now you’ve all got access to it. And it’s pretty much free when you compare the price against the content.

If you’ve seen Curtis perform this live, then you probably share my shock that he’s released it. If you haven’t, buy this and watch the performance.

Here’s a glimpse of what Curtis offers here:
Powerful, visual magic
Examples of professional, advanced, entertaining, comedic, intelligent and strong writing
A simple and honest theme that runs through the act, which should serve as inspiration
Enlightening philosophy
The best example I’ve ever seen on giving the audience a glimpse of your personality and background… in a way they might actually care about (because they usually don’t!)
Material that plays close up and stand up
The best Okito Box routine I’ve ever seen
The best version of Geoff Latta’s Standing [From the Elfin] Horde
At least two new, original effects
A great example of a Magic Castle Act that will make you realize you suck ;)

You may end up wanting to add every routine to your repertoire and you’ll definitely want to add every lesson to your work. This lecture will make you better, whether you’re a professional or an amateur.

Join the lucky crowd and study this lecture.

Missing One Element Report this review

I have enjoyed Curtis live in a lecture near my home. He's an amazing talent that can't be denied. I was so interested in the Puka Stick because a local craftsman has made these beautiful Puka Sticks and was selling them. Once the stick was purchased I was told it didn't come with the routine. I was referred to Curtis and told he had a Penguin Card he could sell me for this lecture that contained the routine. Maybe my terminology could be better when I was speaking in person. I meant the "handling". Unfortunately, this LIVE act has the routine that you can watch but Curtis refers to Dick Zimmerman's Slippery Stones from The Art of Close Up Magic Volume I. Puka Stick: $45 | Curtis Kam Live Act: $39 | Art of Close Up Magic Volume I: $49 on eBay if I'm lucky. $130+ bottom line to learn the Puka Stick = Frustrating.

Beyond that slight issue, I will say I think Curtis is so ridiculously talented in Coin and Okito work! The real value in this lecture is for anyone who is serious about brushing up on their Okito Box and Coin chops. Curtis was a wizard with an Okito and intend to learn from the master.
