Imagine that before you were two cups, one containing the most deadly poison known to man. You and your opponent must battle using your wits to decide who must drink from which cup and risk everything! It’s the ultimate test of intelligence and brains! Now stop worrying about that because it’s actually a pair of coffee cups, and there’s no poison. You and your audience are switching and lying to stay away from a cup of sugar, and you are right every time! Gregory Wilson and David Gripenwaldt have created an incredible routine that provides all the narrative elements from a famous scene in the film The Princess Bride and combined it with a foolproof gimmick that you can use to be able to guess correctly where the sugar is every time. This guessing game will get gales of laughter and gasps of astonishment from your audience when you perform the latest Coffee House Conjuring effect: Pick Your Poison.

Here’s what happens:

Two empty coffee cups are shown, and one has a packet of sugar dumped into it. You then mix them up while telling your audience members the thrilling tale of the battle of wits they are about to engage in, where they must guess which cup has the sugar so they can avoid certain death! No matter which cup they guess, it always contains the sugar. They can make all the choices and switch the cups as much as they like, yet they always end up with the cup of sugary doom! As a sweet finale, you demonstrate how you can vanish the sugar from one cup and make it appear in the empty cup. It’s an impossible choice, followed by an impossible task, all with items you can find in a coffee shop.

As with all of the Coffee House Conjuring effects, everything you need to perform this miracle can be found right at the coffee prep station. A couple of cups and a packet of sugar are all you need for an exciting adventure story punctuated with miracle after miracle. This effect can be used as the setup for a casual Which Hand style presentation or an over-the-top performance of one of the safest Roulette-style routines you could perform. The method is satisfying and easy to construct with just a few moment's notice. Prepare to engage in the most entertaining guessing game you’ll ever perform with Pick Your Poison by Gregory Wilson and David Gripenwaldt.

If you forgot your bag of tricks, Gregory and David got you covered. A couple props, a good story and a “mostly clean” ending. Doesn’t have to be Starbucks, but you will need cups with lids. Good effect

A very deceptive trick Report this review

I was surprised at the simplicity of it, but of course audiences aren’t wowed by how difficult an illusion is but simply if it fools them. This will fool them by the simple props used that they handle every day. He mentions about being sure to use cups from the environment you’re in- I do my coffee drinking primarily at McDonald’s, and the cups there work awesomely well. Note: it needs to be paper cups (Starbucks, McDonald’s), not styrofoam or plastic. But with a few minutes of set-up and you’re ready to go. And easy enough: dispose of it afterwards, you’re left clean and can simply prepare another for the next showing later on. Not really good to repeat with the same person as the effect simply repeats itself. But think about how throwing them away takes away from any thought of gimmicks or fancy props! Highly recommended.

This is a good trick, and I will definitely be doing it. Everyone loves "The Princess Bride". Plenty of opportunity for comedy, quoting funny lines from the battle of wits. My only issue is that he says to do the preparation for it at the prep bar (at the coffee shop). Although not difficult, it does take quite a few minutes. There's no way to do it without someone seeing you, especially if you're not the only one at the prep bar. I would suggest you do it in the bathroom, or bring it with you.

I can't wait to try this. Best of all you are left clean - one cup that makes noise, and one that doesn't.
