Bruce Bernstein has spent over three decades creating, refining and developing some of the most devious feats of mentalism known to man. He's become a trusted, go-to source for many of the greatest mind readers of the last twenty years. He's collected an enviable list of endorsements from nearly every great magician and thought reader of the last thirty years. And now he's gathered together years of thought-provoking, engaging writing into a comprehensive hardbound collection that showcases his work in the finest possible light.

It's called Unreal.

This new book contains Bernstein's most baffling, amazing brainchildren. From commercial predictions (Eat at Joe's), to mind-numbing card miracles (Psych-Out, a revelatory 10 Card Poker Deal), to must-learn techniques (Bernstein Center Tear), and beyond, Unreal covers territory essential to every wonder worker's repertoire.

The book outlines mysteries with the most basic of objects: slips of paper, cards, and money, as well as inexplicable feats of thought reading: predictions, mind reading feats, psychometry, utility techniques for obtaining secret information, cold reading scripts and techniques, and more. Ten new essays compliment the tricks themselves, each written specifically for this book.

All of the miracles described in these pages are within the skill set of the average mentalist. No complicated sleight-of-hand or digital dexterity is required. That said, a healthy dose of chutzpah may be necessary in several instances.

It's all explained in a familiar, engaging style, expertly illustrated by Tony Dunn. Unreal may be the book's title, but performing the miracles it explains is most definitely within reach of everyone that reads it.

All material newly edited and expanded and illustrated, with an introduction by Jon Stetson.

Pages: 242 (plus xii) 7.5" x 10" - Deluxe real linen hardcover - Black and white illustrations

Wow to say more would be redundant.   If you were to buy one book on Mentalism this year this would be it.  Between the covers of this 242pages there is Something  for everyone - Closeup, Walk-around to Stage - an impressive collection.  This is a meaty read as not only are the effects taught but the psychology behind each effect.  The essay's provide food for thought and should be required reading.  There are so many effects in this volume that are worth the price of the book and that is rare today.
Included in this book is " Psych- Out" probably the best 10 card poker deal presentation.  "Eat at Joe's" is a classic and that is just two effect's that you will add to your act.   There is a technique section that covers the famous " Bernstein Center Tear".   This is an excellent center tear - it is difficult to do if you have dry skin - there are other tears that overcome this but I am still trying to get this to work.  The improved billet switch should be worth your attention also.  Again I am just glossing the surface.  This is a must have for the serious mentalist.

I got Unreal in October 2012; long time ago. I felt I have to write a review because the book deserves it.

There are 77 effects in this book, and each one of them is solid. I myself have performed more than 10 effects from the book in my acts. For 48 dollars, this is a total winner !!

For the other effects in the book which I haven't performed, the techniques did inspire a lot of my thinking.

I should also point out, one of the essays is called "Reading Between the Lines", where Bruce is basically telling you that upon reading the effects in the book, you have to "read between the lines" and make out something from the effect, and maybe take it a step further. That's precisely when I got loads and loads out of the book. I think this chapter should be read before reading the entire book.

To this day, I still use some of the effects in my shows.

If Bruce is reading this, I would like to say thanks.

Bruce Bernstein's new book, Unreal, is nothing short of excellent. He covers close-up, parlor and stage mentalism effects that are truly outstanding. Bruce is an old pro who gives you the benefit of his many years of experience. In addition, his essays throughout the book offer words of wisdom that are well worth reading and applying to your performances.

You will not go wrong in making this purchase, and you will want to go back to this book many times. There's gold in those pages.

I'm only halfway through it, but this is a great book with excellent ideas and excellent effects and routines. More importantly, the bits and ideas and handlings can and should be used to make your own current routines better.

I bought this book for a premium during college when it was OOP. Back then I read Bruce Bernstein made some of the best boomerangs and magic creations in the world. He's also one of the authors in Bob Cassidy's 39 Steps to Mentalism. This book is divided into useful sections and contains ideas and routines and essays from his other works. A must and a classic for any mentalist.

Bernstein is a savvy pro and a deep thinker. This book has powerful useable material. Worth the price for Eat at Joe’s alone, but there is much more here.
