The Magic of Celebrating Illusion by Robert E. Neale

In this first installment of his long-awaited Trilogy of Magic, Robert E. Neale uncovers the profound extent to which human experience is informed by our illusions . . . and the essential role magicians play in teaching us how to celebrate it! The book also includes twenty-one of Bob Neale's latest, highly innovative magic routines performed with simple props such as playing cards, bills, rope, and paper. Each one comes with a fully developed presentation.

Self-Awareness of the Grand Illusion Report this review

This book was one of the best reads ever for me. It's Robert Neale's treatise on illusions we mentally create in our everyday lives and how our eyes and brain purposely trick us into a false reality for our personal comfort, the grand illusion. Along the way he teaches some of the coolest magic and optical illusions I've ever read. The first official trick in the book is an absolute blast that anyone can do and will never stop doing. Thanks to the way our eyes and brain are wired together, anyone can lay a bill on their hand and visually cause it to magically stand on its end then levitate up, off the hand. The index of the other hand can even be swept beneath it, proving it's truly levitating! No one else sees it but to the person holding the bill that's absolutely what happens. Your eye and brain just created a false reality for personal enjoyment, which stands the question what's truly real? The book was deep, thought provoking, enlightening, and complimented with great practical magic.

Magic in our lives Report this review

Robert Neale is not interested in tricks or fooling people. He sees the magic and illusion in everyday life. Love, religion, optimism, comforting statements, etc. He blurs the line between living, entertaining and being entertained. This book has lots of effects but even if it didn't I'd be thrilled reading it. It gives a different motivation for the magician/spectator relationship which won't speak to everyone but speaks to me. It also has plenty to say about life itself. Nonmagicians could happily read this and be enlightened as well. Mystery, wonder and curiousity are shared by nearly everyone even if they don't think they enjoy magic. I can't say enough good about this book and will be reading the two follow up editions as well.
