The Linking Finger Rings is, simply, one of the great effects of magic. Invented by Persi Diaconis around 1960 and marketed by Richard Himber, it's the rare sort of effect that captures an audience's imagination:

Three rings are borrowed. The magician proceeds to link them together into a chain of three. He then unlinks them and returns them to their owners.

What makes this a miracle is the fact that the audience members each attest to the fact that their ring is linked with the other two.

Over the years some clever machining has been put into marketed versions of the gimmick... but they weren't always designed for actually performing The Linking Finger Rings.

David Regal's preferred gimmick is included in this set. It was designed for the performance of this classic effect. What you want in your gimmick is:

  • No extraneous movement
  • Instant knowledge of orientation
  • Silence
  • One-hand operation
Regal's unique gimmick does all of the above. In a routine of magic often tarnished by excess "fiddling", undesired moves have been eliminated.

What is new about this release?

First: Quality. A new manufacturer - one that produced a finer product than several other commissioned manufacturers - has turned out rings you will be proud to own and use.

Second: Key improvements.
  • The rings are not only gold-plated, they are put through an enameling process that darkens the engraved area so that in any performing situation one can instantly tell how to orient the gimmick.
  • The Regal design involving magnetic closure has been entirely reengineered and made more durable.
  • The "work area" provided by the gimmick has been enhanced and expanded, allowing for even greater ease of handling.
Third: The price. The Regal gold-plated sets have sold for $300 for many years. Thanks to the new manufacturer's precision, the price of the set has been reduced to $195. The set includes:
  • Regal's new-design Himber gimmick.
  • A matching un-gimmicked ring
  • A matching locking ring (classic method)
  • Gimmicks with which to perform the astounding Koran climax in which two rings hang from a pencil, linked, and one visibly unlinks, falling into the open palm. At that point the rings are returned to the owners with no switching.
  • A pencil and video instruction.
The Regal routine necessitates only one gimmick. The other rings are included to make the set complete, so the purchaser can perform any version of The Linking Finger Rings that he or she desires.

In short, a lovely set of props with which to perform one of the finest effects in magic.

Well, they don't quite deserve a 4 IMO ... but don't quite deserve a 3 either. So ... 3.5 Stars? So, what you're paying for in this case is the rings. Do you need some Himbers? If so then you get 2 for about $100 each. In case you lose one maybe? Or one as a back up?

YES, they are different (in locking mechanism) but not style. So, less discuss the style for a moment. Now, I own a few himbers and we'll go with the following 2 'best case' scenarios:
1) An audience member has the exact same ring as your Himber
2) an audience member has a ring that's really close to your Himber.

That's one of the benefits of using a 'wedding band' style right? They're KINDA close in appearance to a lot of OTHER wedding bands. These rings are probably NOT going to be CLOSE to anything you find in the real world. Maybe I'm wrong but it's going to be hard.

You may say "But Jason, you don't actually need them to look ANYTHING LIKE any other rings because of the routine and the way it's designed"
Sure, but why not then make a giant red ring that is your Himber if that's REALLY the case? Because it's not.

Truthfully I think his PRIOR rings for the Linking Ring Project looked way better and I'd chose that style over these in a heartbeat.

Good idea was to differentiate where the opening is. Outstanding idea and will help for a lot of routines. The magnet one ...hard to keep it to stay open. Don't really want to adjust too much (though instructions say you can).

So, let's talk about the routine. Did I mention that you're paying for RINGS? I feel the routine is about as basic as one can get with the rings ... nothing new AND you don't even get a full uncut performance of the presentation. Do a quick YouTube search for David Regal Linking Finger Ring Project and you'll see pretty much the exact same thing you get for presentation.
I question: Why?
At this point we've paid the price ... let's see the full uncut presentation , good, bad or ugly.

So what leads me to wonder is the following
1) Was the presentation REALLY actually good ... maybe TOO GOOD that Regal didn't want his full routine released? or
2) Was it that bad ... that he really didn't want it released?
If it was the former, then this would be an outstanding buy, but as such, it's mediocre at best.

My suggestion: LOOK at the rings, if you like what they look like, then pick this up for the sake of the rings.
Will I personally be using these rings? Not unless I find one in the audience pretty damn close to the way it looks.
Will I personally be using the routine? That's a BIG NO! There are way better routines out there IMO. Actually ... let me add, the idea of 'creating moments' is pretty good. I may actually use that as a pre-cursor to the trick.

Hope it helps.
