If you are familiar with Woody Aragon's A Book in English you will recognize some of the principles
that make Fortune Tarot work. And if not, you may just learn a lot. It is a clever application of
some really clever principles.
The promotional video is honest and the instructions are
clear. The trick does require some practice (what doesn't?) and audience management, especially when
the spectator cuts and shuffles. The cutting part is easy, but I haven't completly nailed what to do
when the spectator makes a really bad riffle shuffle. In one performance I simply offered help and
riffled the cards together and then let the spectator square the deck - that worked fine.
I
have performed the trick a few times now and will definitely keep doing so. It is fun to perform, in
part because of the principles at work, and it gets good reactions. The kicker ending is really
powerful. So far it has earned me a few expletives and a middle finger from an engineer when he
realized that he wasn't going to figure out the trick after all.
