VERBL is a visually shocking effect where a ring and rubber band appear to melt through each other
in different phases. The method is clever and easy to learn, though it 100% will require practice
and developing muscle memory to do it quickly and smoothly while guarding your angles. (It's not
terribly angle sensitive, though, and Kyle points out the big danger spot, which is easy enough to
hide).
Pros:
Incredibly Visual: The effect is highly visual and will leave your
spectators baffled. The first phase especially seems flat-out impossible, especially when done with
a borrowed ring.
Impromptu: While there is a brief set-up, there are no gimmicks. Tt can
(and should) be performed with a borrowed ring, and even a borrowed rubber band if you find one of
the right size. And, naturally, since there are no gimmicks, you end clean.
Easy to Learn:
The instructions are clear and concise, making it relatively easy to master with dedicated practice.
Kyle repeats the actions from different camera angles so you can see how it's done step-by-step.
He's a quality teacher.
Cons:
The only possible weak spot is there is a set-up,
and while it is very short and simple (Kyle suggests it's 2 seconds, and that's probably right),
it's still a *dangerous* 2 seconds because you're doing it with a borrowed ring. Not easy to get
people to look away from a piece of their property you're fooling around with.
I wish
there had been suggestions on how to do this - maybe you pretend you're testing out the rubber band
to make sure it won't snap? I'm not sure.
Overall:
Get it. VERBL is a solid
addition to any magician's repertoire. The visual impact is undeniable, and with consistent
practice, it can become a reliable and impressive impromptu effect. I recommend it to magicians who
enjoy visual magic and are willing to invest the time to perfect the technique.
