First of all, let me state that I have a tremendous amount of respect for Oz's skills and knowledge.
After having watched Born to Perform and Triumph, my expectations were pretty high for this project.
This DVD was a letdown. I bought it at a magic sale and I still felt like I wasted my money.
Admittedly, I am not a fan of story tricks. I also didn't care for the back story of screwing up
a dating arrangement to where some females know the other females. Oops! A repeated
change/transposition type effect doesn't need a story in my opinion as Oz handled the cards
smoothly.
Also I did not care for the king storyline used on another trick. I felt like
that was wasted on what could have been a strong series of revelations.
As far as the
pirate trick is concerned, I thought the patter was a little more interesting--bizarre, but the
audience dug it. It's card to impossible location with "mistakes" prior to the revelation. The
methods and structure are neat and could be modified to suit your character if a pirate getup
doesn't work for you. There are plenty of card to impossible locations out there. I think the card
to Snapple bottle Oz did was better actually.
The only piece I felt was truly good was
Emerge Triumphant, which you can download or get as part of the Triumph DVD (which is a good value
and you learn about triumph variations besides this one). If you've been doing card magic for a
while, I would suggest you give this pass and maybe check out some of Oz's other work. I would not
suggest this.
