I have tried other card at any number effects, and this is the cleanest handling I've ever tried.
There is a moderate learning curve (mostly memorization) but most people I've shown this to said
this was by far the most impressive magic they have seen me do.
I perform the variation in
which a black envelope is given to the spectator before we start, then a number from 1 to 52 is
called out by the spectator. The cards are removed from the box and handed to the spectator, who is
asked to look through the cards to make sure they are mixed up. Then ask the spectator to count the
cards face up to the number they selected. At the number, that card is set aside. The envelope is
opened by the spectator (it has been in their possession the whole time) and the card in the
envelope matches the card counted to by the spectator. Mind blowing!
For my magic club
competition, I will have red and blue decks. The red deck is fanned by me to show the cards are
mixed. A random spectator will freely select a card and place it face down on the table. A second
spectator will call out a number, then count with the blue deck, turning each card face up as they
count. The selected blue card that is counted to is placed next to the face down red card. The red
card is turned over and they match!
