I just performed it for a couple of friends and yes i fooled them.
I was familiar with the original idea behind the trick but Rick added a new level to this effect.

The explanation by Rick is as usual 100% satisfactory.

The best thing about this trick is that its impromptu.
But Rick gave a suggestion to use it with cards and yes if you use it with cards you'll get the most awesome reactions.
