Mentalism differs from conventional magic in that the actual tricks (usually visual in nature) used
in magic are the magician's "flourish," as Mr. Ferguson explains in this DVD.
A mentalist's
character, presentation and delivery... these combined are his "flourish."
Selling the
effects in one's mind through the mentalist's showmanship is his craft, versus having a mere gimmick
or trick steal the show away from the magician's persona.
Anyone can perform the tricks on
this DVD, though it will take a true memorable character to build-up the reputation desired from
performing these effects, and others.
If you'd like to be taken seriously in mentalism
instead of being suspected of mere trickery, buy this DVD, practice what you learn, and let your
character sell the effects.
Please don't watch this DVD and go out performing these effects
immediately without practicing on how others will perceive you first.
I mention all of this
because these are mistakes that I personally made performing these effects for the first time when I
started out.
I performed all the tricks in this DVD on strangers, yet my reactions were
slightly above mediocre.
I went home, viewed the DVD a few more times, practiced until I
got it all down perfect, went out, and still got slightly above mediocre reactions.
What
the Hell was I doing wrong? Do these effects just suck?!
No...
It was ME.
I didn't look the part, talk the part or act the part at all. I couldn't sell these effects, as
good as they looked because my delivery was stale.
Fast forward a year, as now I get
bookings for gigs using material I started with on this DVD!
It's all about character.
These effects are great, and you'd do well to look into Mind Tricks and Mentally HYP if you're
just getting started into mentalism.
I'd also lookup material by Banachek & Luke Jermay if
you're looking for some advanced material.
Good luck!
