Wow, Rick Lax really hit it out of the park with this one. I would definitely rank this among the
top 5 tricks I learned in 2017. Rick's been working on this for four years and it really shows.
Ironically, I knew the principle behind this trick, I've even done several versions of it in the
past and it still fooled me.
The teaching is crystal clear, the set up will only take you few
minutes and as long as you're careful reset should take under a minute. The trick is super strong
but performing this is so easy a beginner could do it. It's been years since I learned a trick that
didn't require a gimmick but yet was this strong and easy.
He also teaches a way to make it
more deceptive, but in my mind the risk/return is not good enough to be worth doing (it doesn't make
the trick much more deceptive, it requires very specific instructions that seem slightly fishier
than I would like, your reset will take at least double as long, and there's a tiny chance of
flashing) unless you are performing on a magician that is better than Penn and Teller at figuring
out tricks. 99% of the time you should do the original version of the trick.
One very
important thing I want to point out is that this trick is not meant for walk-around as there is
about a one minute reset that has to be done off to the side and you will either have to start with
this and switch it out afterwards (and it's really tough to follow) or ring it in right before you
perform it. However, for parlor, a couple of friends, or special tables this trick gets my highest
recommendations (and if you've been following my reviews you'll see I don't say that lightly).
Can the deck be shown face up before and or after to any degree. Thanks
Yes, you can and do show the deck face up
You can (and should) do it before without any problems. I wouldn't do it after.
Ok Rick, you sold me on another, but, I’m still trying to learn the puppy card, 🤠🎩❤️
Is this done with a normal deck of cards or will I need to do a DS to get into the routine?
If you are going to be closing with this expect it to be a different deck than the one you are performing with (there are tricks you can do with this deck first, but they probably aren't the tricks you planned on performing). It doesn't have to be a real DS. You can just put away the deck and then say "actually, let me show you one more."
DS would be simple by doing a non card trick... reason for putting the deck in your pocket then after that trick come back to a card trick, ie... DS with a none gimmick deck!
In the video, the deck isn't shown face up. Can you show the spectator the face up deck in the beginning, something like "Notice that all the cards are different, this is a normal deck" or can you spread them at the end to show that all the cards are not the king of diamonds? Is the card the King of Diamonds each time?
@khartwick - 1. yes the cards can be shown face-up at first (as a quick read through the other comments would have helped you ascertain), 2. you *could* spread them at the end, but it is not recommended (and largely unnecessary), 3. no it's not always the same card.
