Alakazam is proud to release the debut material by one of the best underground card magicians in the world: Benjamin Earl. For years, Ben has been one of Europe's top professional performers and innovative creators. Like many of these quiet achievers, he has previously avoided magicians, conventions and all attempts to get him to share his original material. Until now...

We can't tell you how they managed it, but you'll be very pleased that they did! This new DVD set comprises three volumes of startling, original material that will surely find its way into the repertoires of hobbyists and professionals alike.

Disc One features Ben's imaginative handlings for several of card magic's classic plots. Do we need new versions of Collectors, Hofzinser's Aces and Triumph? We do when they are this eye-popping! As well as these fantastic new approaches to traditional plots, this disc also contains many original flourishes and sleights as well as all the work on Ben's 'Stroke Change', which looks like trick-photography even when you know how it's done. Best of all, this incredible change, like almost all the material on this disc, is easily within the reach of any intermediate card handler.

Disc Two focuses on gambling and card table material. As a true student of the art, Ben has been refining and advancing card table artifice for many years. The finessed handlings and methodological advances that he demonstrates and teaches on this disc comprise some of the most important contributions to this branch of card magic by a new voice for many years. Fans of 'the real work' will be delighted by Ben's decision to share these prized techniques.

Disc Three contains a wealth of Ben's mental card magic, a style which he prefers to perform these days. There are several fantastic and totally practical handlings for Think-A-Card as well as versions of Mental Poker and Brainwave that break entirely new ground. Impossible Locations and Thought Card To Pocket handlings which fool absolutely everyone ensure that the only problem you'll have with Ben's material is which tricks to leave out of your performance!

Past Midnight is one of those DVD sets that seems to get the mix of entertainment and instruction really right. It is impressively produced and the packaging and finish is all top-notch. The amount of content is a good reason for the price. I've had it for a while now and I can be honest to say that I am still working through it (I'm halfway through the second DVD). It's the kind of set that you pick up, watch a routine, spend ages working on that one routine, put the DVD away and move on. Then a few days, weeks or months later, you come back and look for more.

A few notes: These tricks are not for beginners. The handling is not easy and the sleights are intermediate. His teaching style is thorough but he has a matter-of-fact style that makes you feel kinda stupid when you don't get things down instantly - "it's done like this..see.." and you're like "no..I..hang on..wait..crap..dammit..rewind".

The only reason I will give this 4 stars out of 5 is because of the repetitive music through-out the entire thing. Oh my goodness. I have not watched this DVD for a few months now and I can hear the tune in my head as I write this. If only there was a way to watch it without the "spooky beats". A small side point.

Overall - Buy this. Yes, it's pricey but you aren't investing in one trick - you are buying a collection. Think of it this way: If my calculations are correct you are getting 44 routines for $75. That's roughly $1.70 per routine. Come on!

The handling and the thought behind Benjamin Earl's effects
excellent. All the slights are explained, perhaps not where you expect them. The Erdnase explainations I found enlightning, I had developed a differnt one handed shift from my reading The Expert at the Card Table, 50 years ago.

Ben Earl Rocks Report this review

This is one awesome set of DVDs if you love cards as much as I do. Ben Earl combines beautiful technical skills with clever effects to produce stunning results. He is also a good teacher, although he doesn't explain everything in the slow detail I would like. For example, compare his skimpy teaching of the bottom deal with that of Jason England's incredible download. However there's always a rewind button to help.
Overall, this is a winner.

I bought this set of DVDs for my adult son for his birthday. He has been fascinated with the techincal side of slieight-of-hand for many years. I don’t think he aspires to be a magician of any sort but only to understand the skills a litle better in order to add to his appreciation of the art. He has thanked me profusely for this set of DVDs and it apparently fills the bill for him very well. He has found them to be exactly what he has been looking for in terms of understanding and appreciating the skills better and he has been very impressed with the clarity of the presetation and the progression of the lessons. He also really likes how it is not only the basic skills that are covered but also some of the more subtle apsects of technicality, misdirection, and patter. He has been and continues to be very pleased and has told me he is looking forward to watching these videos over and over again. He thinks he might even be able to pick up one or two tricks to impress his young nephews! The fact that he so highly endorsses this set of DVDs makes it easy for me to give them my highest endorsement, too.

This is an incredible DVD set. You can find easy and difficult tricks, but all of them are powerful, and a few of them will fool magicians. All the great ideas he shares will help you creating your own magic. I repeat it : this is a must for card workers.
