I was very impressed with the coin skills of Curtis and chums on this DVD. The visual effects (and
skills needed to achieve them) are impressive.
My BIG beef with this DVD- and with the
performance of so many coin 'magicians'- is the appalling patter.
Take 'repeat Coins From
Nostril', for example. I cannot recall how many times I heard the phrase 'of course' mumbled just
before a change, revelation, disappearance etc. The general feel I got was that the magician's
patter was hastily made up as he (no names mentioned!) went along.
This reminded me of what
magic is NOT. It is NOT just about showing off with cards, coins, etc. It is NOT about entertaining
yourself. It is about creating magic in the minds of spectators. This requires practise not only of
moves, sleights and the rest, but interaction with people. Making connections and maintaining
interest. Patter is a crucial step in transforming tricks into magic.
So, coin magicians, please
get out of the bedroom, cast off your desire to show off and start creating WONDER.
Okay, rant
over!
To be fair, this DVD is about the moves. Hence "Palms of Steel" and "Fists of Fury" so it is not really intended for you to ripoff their patter. You learn coin moves and routines from this DVD and that is it. If you need to work on scripting and patter for your magic you may need to look elsewhere
